Canon Rumors announced a possible 35mm f/1.4L II and 24-70 f/2.8L II with a January 3, 2012 release. Anyone thinking of jumping ship early on their old equipment and hoping for these releases?

Also forgot to mention a 5D MK2 price drop at B&H to $2039 through this link: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search...ch=yes/BI/4906

Really contemplating selling early for the 24-70 II... Argh.

Hey, so quick question for you guys.

What camera would you recommend to a person who is taking more of an interest in photography? Yes, I am asking for myself. I have a "pocket" digital camera but I would like to step my game up, if you know what I mean.

I bought a D3100 for my first DSLR. I'm still trying to learn the ins and out of photography before I step into something better. I've seen shots here from the D5100 and the shots look great. I read that the sensor is the same sensor as in the D7000. If I had to pick a beginner DSLR now, it would be between the Nikon D5100 and the Canon T3i.

I agree about the D5100, but I think I'd look at the Canon 60D as a starting point rather than the T3i. Funds allowing, of course.

I too own a D3100, but I couldn't afford double the price-tag of a D5100

If you're Nikon, then a D3100 or D5100, for Canon it'd be a T3i or T2i, budget willing, in all cases. I moved staight from a Canon G9 to a Canon 5D MkII and never regretted it one bit, so it depends on the budget a lot.

There's no clear advantage between Nikon and Canon, IMHO, with both being good. Sony and Pentax are very good also, but you get lens-limited if you get really serious. Canon has the widest selection of super-teles, but, other than that, there's no really clear advantage. Below super-tele ranges, all of the four brands mentioned have good lens selection at "competitive" prices.

Canon advantages: Slightly cheaper Pro glass. More super-tele glass options. Canon offers rebates quite often for their stuff, while Nikon rarely does.
Nikon advantages: Better high ISO performance. Broader lens range, since you can use just about any lens from 1959 on.

I think Nikon has better ergo's too, but that is my opinion. Can't really go wrong with either.

I'd say that ergonomics will depend on which system you started with. Moving from my G9 to my 5D MkII there were only a few added functions, but placement stayed very consistant.

Canon's full-frame high-ISO performance gives up nothing to Nikon and the 1D-X may well surpass Nikon in this regard. In the crop sensors Canon favors detail over noise. If you're cropping a crop sensor image, then Canon generally wins in detail, Nikon wins in noise. Take your pick, you can't have both, yet. Expose Right, my mantra.

that would be fun....

Was reading up on some MF addicts out there. Pretty good arguments.

nice then about some of the higher end canon lenses, you can autofocus them, and then fine tune them by hand without hurting any of the gear inside, unlike the lower end lenses.

I like the fact that you can buy some really good MF glass for short money compared to their AF counterparts. Roki 35mm f1.4, for example. And then on the other end of the spectrum there are Zeiss lenses which are MF but have that certain way of rendering that makes images look 3-D. I was damn good at manually focusing in the film days with a split screen focus. I think I could get back to that level again.

I set a Preset in my workflow (DxO) that brings the brightness down and applies an slight S-curve in the RGB. After the preset, then I touch up the Level, Contrast, etc. In fact, since I've made the Preset my Default, I really fly through RAW conversion now.
