Edmunds Inside Line - No M1, probably 135is instead

"Months and months and more months ago we reported that BMW would not do a M1 version of the 1 Series. We had it on good authority from a source inside BMW. Still, the rumors of the cars existence have lit up every blog and forum the world over.

Well, today at the Geneva Auto Show Inside Line has once again confirmed from a source inside BMW that the M version of the 1 Series will not happen. Got that people? It will not happen.

"If we do something, it'll be a 135is like we've done with the Z4 and the 3 Series," the source told us with a wink.

So this fall look for BMW to introduce a 135is powered by a more powerful version of the twin-turbo N54 inline six-cylinder and a more aggressively tuned suspension.

That is all." http://blogs.insideline.com/straight...auto-show.html

* This of course contradicts with what BMW insider Scott26 who still maintains that the M1 exists and is coming!

Wow....well this might explain why no one is seeing anything at Geneva....

What a crock--whoever said we have been "had" looks to be right.....

I think BMW loves drama. I'm still waiting for the fat chick to sing.

Hate to admit it, but this makes more sense (135is)

Yeah.....been kinda leary of this whole M1 concept all along. Sure I got excited just like the rest of us. However I've been a bit of a realist. Timing, projected volumes, price point, current economic / political climate, etc all come together against such a car.

If there is no M1, then I will be fine. That means those of us with 135s still have one of the best current Bimmers out there...if not the best.

Unfortunately can't be the best with the soft suspension, runflats, and no LSD. The best current selling Bimmer goes to the E9x M3, IMO.

sad day. but the think the m1 was a go until someone from BMW put the project on hold last week. now its probably in limbo. could go either way or they might just tone it down and save money and just update some parts on the current 135 and call it a day :/

The M1 will likely just b a 1 series CSL-esque version for europe IMO. It has all the ques of a CSL e46, so i dont think they feel there is a market for such cars in US.

I was looking forward to the M1. If the M1 moniker is the sticky issue within the BMW brass, then why not name it 1M so as not to take away anything from the iconic M1. Just build it and we'll happily call it 1M.

That goes along with what I have been thinking. Does it make sense to start a M model on a chassis that is already 6-7 years old? I am happy if they do build one but I probably wouldn't buy one for reasons 1) chassis is being revamped, 2) big question mark on the engine, 3) weight reduction margin on E82. I don't work in investment that pulls in 10-20 mil a year on bonus so a 50-60k investment on a car is a major decision. Certainly not going to blow it on a line that will be phased out soon.

Fine, let's do a short summary on what we've got that speaks for an M1 so far and what we've got that speaks against it:

There'll be an E82 M1
  • Dr Kay Segler, CEO of BMW ///M, told German Auto Motor und Sport in November 2009:
"Currently, we concentrate on evaluating the feasibility to produce an M variant based on the current generation 1 series. [...]
Usually, the development for such a car needs 3 years. But, we're planning to communicate the first details on the car around Christmas 2010
with its market launch scheduled for Spring 2011
    ".
  • Scott providing detailed information on the features and design options of the car.
  • Mario Theissen, director of BMW Motorsport Division, when asked whether it's too late for an M version of the current 1 series:
"Yes, certainly, it is too late, although you can always look forward to it… but I cannot talk about product plans for the future”.
There won't be an E82 M1
  • No appearance of the M1 Concept at Geneva 2010
  • Edmunds Inside Line Blog citing a source inside BMW:
"'If we do something, it'll be a 135is like we've done with the Z4 and the 3 Series,'
the source told us with a wink."
  • Different publications considering above mentioned spy shots to be early mules of the next generation 1 series
  • Mario Theissen, director of BMW Motorsport Division, when asked whether it's too late for an M version of the current 1 series:
"Yes, certainly, it is too late, although you can always look forward to it… but I cannot talk about product plans for the future”.

I'd like to let everybody decide for themselves what to believe and what not to believe.

If I forgot anything which should be in this list, please comment and I'll add it.

Best regards,
south

If they create a great car like M1 or 1M. They will destroy the market for M3. I am not quite shocked if M1 doesn't happen.

M3 is their flagship car, and it means that feasibility of M1 failed the test where they look at market change...So I think for $40-$46k price tag that all you are gonna get is an factory modded 135 which 135is.

The M3 IMO is not BMW's flagship car. The M5 is. Its so odd how everyone is saying the M1 didn't make sense anyway. The tune was quite different a few days ago. BMW is known for doing things that don't make sense to us. Like 135i sharing the same engine as a car costing almost $20,000 more(5er). Producing X6M and X5M's. At the end of the day they might have a larger idea what would sell on this end of the price-range. Look at their sales by volume compared with the other luxury competition in the U.S.
