My wife and I are considering ED on an M3 next year, so I'm curious about your Ring experience. In your opinion, do you need to have significant track experience to be safe (assuming you know your limits)? I've had driving school experience (at BMW's Spartanburg center) but no track experience. Seems like it would be pretty hard to adhere to break-in (which I know doesn't matter to some) on the Ring - is this feasible while still driving fast enough to not be a danger?
I would be very nervous to drive my car on the Ring (I don't have track experience). Would LOVE to do it but basically if you break it, your screwed big time.

You would most likely need to break the "break in period rules" , which I am one of those that say screw it. I have never adhered to break in periods and never once had an issue. Now with that said I don't beat the piss out of it, but I do drive it to enjoy it. In fact I think my cars have run stronger because of it.

It's best to hit the ring early morning if you want to play it safe. In the morning it is not as crowded.

Has anyone taken their son on a ride on the ring? My son will be 6 years old and I would love to experience the ring together with him.

Has anyone taken their son on a lap ride on the ring on their European Delivery?

I may have influenced her decision a little... I drive everywhere that we go together, so I wanted to make sure her next car was something I'd like driving as well. That being said, she had narrowed her choice of a "fast, manual sedan with luxury and heated seats" down to BMW given how few manual lux sedans are sold these days. She looked at a 328i MSport at first. Liked it. Then drove the 335i and liked the power more. But she hated that the dash in the 335i was half beige/half black with the beige interior. So when she found out the M3 had an all black dash with the sonoma biege leather...she was sold! Seems like an odd reason to upgrade, right? Then again, the M3 has so many standard features like the nav that you are really getting your money's worth going up from the 335i.

She's a little scared to drive over there...still working on that one. I would love to have her follow me up to Nurburg and then she can park her car for a few days if she doesn't want to drive any more. I think she'll look back and regret not having driven it over there at all.
Congrats, awesome pics.

So two of the exact same car, same options, same everything, except one is a gross color, and neither of you tracks? What a waste. But whatevs, fools and their money, right?

Awesome trip photos, I always reading enjoy well-illustrated ED trips like this one, and I can't wait to take my own. Congrats and put me down as mad jelly.

Yeah, that is my concern. I definitely understand differing opinions about break-in; I keep my cars long term (10 years for the M5, 7 years for the M coupe, and 15 years for the Merc SUV with no plans to sell), and this definitely influences my practice.

In looking at the Ring web page, I see you can rent a 997 S for approx 500 Euros. Perfect - problem solved!

Yes there are photographers taking pictures at different points on the track always. They sell them on their webistes, just google "Nurburgring tourist rides pics" and you will find them. They normally have pics sorted by dates and sometimes they are even broken down by car maker so it's easier to find.
