I does feel strange going back to the Zoo for the first time in years as an adult in a long while since childhood.

It is a great place to dial in new equipment before an assignment with the amount of photo opportunities abundant.

The images in this thread were all taken with the Nikon AF-S 400mm/F2.8 below.

The focusing speed of this lens is scary. It's instant as you would expect.

So many on here keep talking about the D-SLR body they need or want to buy next and forget or end up skimping on the optical lens quality they put with it by buying a slow zoom.

The quality of the lens you use is equal if not more important than anything else. To save money they rationalize buying a cheaper alternative by saying to themselves that low light focusing ability, F2.8 or wider aperture, subject isolation, instant focusing and image quality is not worth the extra price.

Judge for yourself if they are right.

Come down and visit, also it's a great excuse for buying a new lens.

But when it comes to new lenses who needs an excuse anyway....

Quote me on this: This summer I'm going to Melbourne. I've been there 12 times now. The past two times I went, we took a trip to Wye River down the Great Ocean Road. Tell me you've driven on that road! I would kill to have roads like that in the US.

You've just named one of the best driving roads in Australia.

Living here, we forget how lucky we are down in Oz.

For all those who are unfamiliar with this, please see the image below!!!

The Great Ocean Road was built by 3000 returned servicemen in 1932 (or "Diggers") as a war memorial for fellow servicemen who had been killed in the First World War.

Being in Melbourne this is right on our door step and it stretches for 250km/155mi...!!! There is a 60MPH speed limit with constant views of the Southern Ocean that are truly breathtaking.

The Great Ocean Road drive is the standard club run for every car club in Victoria at least a few times a year. When you look at the picture you can see why.

The BMW Car Club Of Victoria has had many club run days along this road for it's members to really enjoy what our cars were made for. I invite you come run with us as an honorary member.

Most of us understand the importance of good fast glass. The glass you are using is 8 grand. I think your standards for quality glass is a bit different than most. Most of the shooters here do it as a hobby. I would never spend over 2 grand on a lens because...well honestly my pockets aren't deep enough to justify spending that much for just for a hobby. I'm sure it's safe to assume your camera gear is probably worth more than some of the cars we drive.

I am not a professional photographer. I have not made one dollar from my images. I honestly don't see the need to 'justify' a purchase that is solely intended for my personal use and not my business.

We will all die one day and cannot take our money with us and if we do not spend it on that which we enjoy what are we all working for....

There are many hobbies that are much more expensive than what I have invested in camera gear.

I wouldn't want to be a Pro as I enjoy my hobby of photography too much to turn it into a business.

When ever you accept money for something there are always strings attached.

I look forward to seeing more of your images, keep posting please and lets get this section of the forum really moving.
