Thumbs up Carbon Cleaning - Subaru Upper Engine cleaner

I have been debating over getting the walnut blasting done to get rid of the Carbon deposits and decided to give this product a try first. The Subaru boxer engine is know for its carbon deposits and this product is used at every service interval to keep things clean. It is a similar product to Seafoam but has a couple different additives in it.

This is the product here, http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulle...leaner-124771/

I used a can of this and sprayed it into the Brake Booster vacuum line according to the instructions. I didn't blow out as much white smoke as I thought I would but holy cow, the results so far have been amazing! The car is running better than it ever has before since using this and I have had it for three years! Throttle response is greatly improved and no turbo lag at all when going through the gears.

I am absolutely blown away by the difference this made!

At least it seems easy to try before ripping apart the whole engine. How much did it cost? And what was your procedure?

When I did my walnut blast I can say is there was too much build up for something in a can to take care of. And if I could it would eat the metal with it.

It's $20 for a can from the Suby dealer or ebay, easy to do yourself. It was night and day difference for me. Even a buddy that went for a ride at lunch commented on how good the car was running and he didn't even know I did anything.

I guess for the price you'd think it's worth a shot, but the ultimate solution would be to walnut blast. I'm not sold that there is any additive you could use to reduce the amount of carbon build up as these cars are direct injection

Problem with that crap (and seafoam) is that it doesnt remove hard baked deposits, and it fouls plugs and very expensive o2 sensors, as well as clogs cats.

There is a reason why BMW does not recommend products like these.

Consider plaque clogging up an artery. It doesn't cause a heart attack until it breaks loose. Carbon is very hard, and it's even better off sitting there if you're not going to remove of it properly.

logical analogy, but if the carbon was chipped off by hand and not extracted, it would be spat out through the exhaust after a couple of revs tops, it shouldn't be anywhere near large enough a chunk to damage a valve either.

still, definitely better off removing it properly anyway.

I don't think it would be so much of damaging a valve as to Scaring the cylinder walls. Carbon is hard stuff and if it gets stuck between the side wall and the piston, above the piston rings, it could cause a few nice scrapes before being spat out. Who the hell knows the potential(although unlikely) for any damage in the turbine and/or CAT.

With all of that said, I see this is similar to Meth injection in the sense of adding a foreign liquid(even if atomized) into the intake tract and potentially loosening/softening up these carbon deposits.

But what do I know.. I'm still learning this platform.

These engines cake on build up badly and you really need to walnut blast to actually blow out all the buildup. It is very drastic how much better the engine runs when cleaned well.

Definitely not in my case. The car drives much better, not just a bit. Best $20 I've spent on the car!

Its likely it did very little i would put that 20$ towards a a walnut blast. You need physical agitation to break off the carbon from the engine. If you have a warranty and make enough complaints of all the symptoms of carbon build up you may be able to get the dealership to blast the engine for you like i did. If not find a reasonable local shop and have it blasted it is a night and day difference.

That's not how we do the carbon cleaning. The walnut blasting machine has a vacuum attached to the intake port, so everything is pulled out.

I use the Subaru cleaner on both of my non Subaru direct injection vehicles. Yet to pull either apart to see if it actually makes a difference.

yah i know, that's the proper way to do it

you CAN still chip it away by hand/with a brush and a hand vacuum and not worry too much if there's slight scraps left behind.

The shop that cleaned my intakes also used this Subaru cleaner as they do not have a walnut blaster....it is potent stuff. He sprayed some on a bench and said "sniff that" ...WOW

They still pulled the manifold and did each cylinder whilst sucking it out the crap with the vacuum. Showed me the before and after picks and it was clean as a whistle.
