If I was young, lived in a warm climate, and has 30K to spend for a fast car (sounds nice !) that I wanted to mod, I'd get an older BMW M3 if I wanted a nice solid reliable good handling car, and a c5Z06 or used C6 base vette for speed. Just my opinion. Keep the F150 and buy a sports car! I know, I know, BMW forum...

As for the above discussion, I can't see how it is possible that a turbo car could hold its value as well as a NA. I own a WRX (bought it new) and can tell you I wouldn't buy a used one after reading 10 million posts on forums about that car. This is not just my opinion - it's almost common knowledge: Turbos make engines fail sooner. These newer design engines need to prove themselves otherwise. When I told my wife to get her 328 over the 335, I had no idea about the fuel pump issue. But I'm just not surprised that the more stressed (and new design) engine has the reliability issues. Just as an Impreza is more reliable than a WRX. It MUST be. Turbos are nice to squeeze HP out of easily, though, as everyone has said already.

I really enjoy the 328xi. It's not as fast as my WRX but is very smooth and totally adequate outside of a racetrack, and much much better on a road trip. I'm old enough to remember when the straight 6 WAS the fast 3 series engine. The 318 was plenty fast too!

Don't buy a car based on how much it'll be worth 3 years from now, or resale. Buy what's fun

I browse this forum frequently and I have seen nobody post about stealing a CPO'ed 335i. Even so if a bunch of shifty people were able to scam a few sellers with their alarmist claims that doesn't destroy the whole 335i market.

BMWFS uses conservative heavily estimated numbers based on their previous experiences. The results are exactaly what you'd expect from a conservative estimate based on past experience.

I know two BMW salesmen on a personal level, and they've violated company policy and given me privileged information multiple times for my benefit. I've even taken them to track events. There's no shenanigans involved when they say BMWFS numbers aren't accurate. It's in their honest experience. The conservative estimated past experience based BMWFS numbers are just that and even the sales people agree, not suprising.

Look, I'm a financial analyst. It's my job to figure things like this out all day. I just ran the numbers again with today's used 3 series prices, here is my conclusion: Within my region it costs, based on current average pricing figures, $15 more in depreciation (that's fifteen dollars) over 3 years to own a base 335i coupe compared to a base 328i coupe with the same standard options as a 335i.

You can be confused and disagree with this number, but it's simply the truth.
Financial analysis? Have you read those latest auction deals for the 335i's? What region are you talking about?

I just sold my E90 M3 and had the same debate about the 335 vs. 328. After driving both, the 328, hands down. The 335 simply isn't smooth. I know the 335 owners are going to blast me for it but after having owned an M3 that is the most linear motor I've ever owned, the 335 is very peaky by comparison.

If you HAVE to have 350-400 HP I'd do an M, but not out of warranty. Nor a 335 for that matter. Both cars have things that break that are stupid expensive to fix.

And forget the guy that said to get a S/C M3. Buying a car that already makes 414HP and then adding a $14K supercharger so you can have 675HP is just a bit of overkill.

Hell, a stock S4 will do 330 HP at the wheels on a Mustang AWD dyno, assuming you're even looking at other brands.

If you simply HAVE to have that much power and can over look the atrocious mileage, do the M3. If you can deal with the very real possibility of owning an unreliable modded car, do the 335.

Yes it's covered but it's also inconvenient as hell. And what do you do when you're out of warranty?

You won't get much power out of a 328. Search around a little bit.

Actually there is a diy to replace it yourself, and it's not too hard. They are only $220~
