I think the new 7 series is gorgeous, it's without a doubt better looking than that heinous E65. The 5er is shaping up to be a nice car as well, and I'm not even remotely concerned about the direction of the new 3, shit, when the E90 first came out I thought they were the ugliest things on the road. IMO that's the beauty of BMW, I think people are confused by revolutionary/unique designs because we're naturally so opposed to change, and if something looks different we'll find a way to hate it, at first.

If you're going to hate the new models, hate them because they look so much alike.

I love how aggressive the hatch looks, but then again the first time I saw one it was being driven by Ken Block

funny you should post this, I was at the dealer yesterday and while walking through the lot I saw the grills on the 5 series and did a doubletake, not a fan...

The 7 looks like it has a huge overbite. It looks awful to me. Just because merc and audi are going with huge grilles doesnt mean that bmw should. A bmw should be sleek and sexy.

I like the front end design of new BMW, especially compared to new MB. Part of the reason I ran from MB w/o looking back after having what I thought was one of their best cars (design-wise), a C coupe (CL203).

These two marques follow different design directions. Even given the fact that modern safety regulations limit the free flow of designers' ideas, they remain distinctly different. As for personal likes/dislikes - it usually takes time for an innovation to become accepted. It usually goes like this: "what an ugly thing!" -> "there is something in it..." -> "I like it!" -> "how could I live without it?".

As for myself, I did like the E46 a lot, then did not like the E90 (at which point bought a MB C coupe), then saw an e92 parked near my office and almost dropped dead... That was it for me, especially after MB released pitcures of then-upcoming W204 (the present-gen C-Class).

Grills are fine IMO. EU Pedistrian impact rules force manufacturers to have taller than normal front ends. You have fill it with something and they can't break the line with a protruding bumper.

anyone else agree?
This thread would be decent if you posted comparison shots. Sure I could go research, but nah.

I think that BMW has done quite well with the grills - considering the standards they have to meet are pushing them in this direction.

I have a few good grill shots of the new GT here - and of the Z4 here.

That's not it.

There are two things going on; style and safety.

Big grilles are fashionable. You wouldn't want the car you are marketing to have the smallest anything.

Designing for safety - not only for the passengers, but for pedestrians, means a larger, more blunt shape up front. Gotta fill up that space with something.

I didn't like when Audi started with the Edsel grill a few years back - but I'm getting used to the style.

Style grows on you. I actually was not crazy about the current e90 when it came out. Now I love it.

Personally, I like the more upright design of the grills (reminicent of Bimmers past); however, their larger size fits best the larger models of BMW (7 series, X5; 5 series). We'll see how BMW will integrate that design in the smaller line-up (3 and 1), where it could look out of place.

Having said that, the integration of this design in the new Z4 is extremely well executed, so I am hopefull.

Grill is slightly too big.

It looks out of proportion to the rest of the car.

If it were ~20% smaller I think it would look just right.

BMW has a knack of getting their cars JUST to the brink of looking awesome, then doing something major that completely destroys the look altogether.

If you don't like the size of the BMW grill, I doubt Audi will be much of an option.
