OBD problem. No link

OBD not working
My case is I have a check engine light and my OBD II reader, and the fancy expensive OBD reader at my local independent BMW shop, are not able to get any codes. Both our readers keep coming up with a link error. Anyone have an idea what could be causing this? I think there's an OBD fuse, but could that really be the problem or could it be something else?
Thanks
