They change the oil only if they find broken bolts...oil pan needs to be removed...

Just FYI- I had my valve cover gasket replaced when the recall was performed but it wasn't listed on the service receipt as related to the vanos work. Just said an oil leak was observed during the standard inspection. I wasn't there to ask questions when picking it up but figured they might have been padding the books with warranty work. Either way I'm happy to have it replaced free of charge.

They did replace the oil but not the filter it seems. They didn't reset the service interval for oil either so I will be taking it for another free change in 4000 miles 😄

Does anyone know if the charge pipe has to come off for this recall? After getting mine done my car was intermittently shutting off on me at stops and even in motion. I took it back to the dealer and they said the "charge air pipe grommet" came loose and was causing this. I haven't heard of this and suspect that the dealer dropped the ball on something during the vanos recall process. Another forum member had their recall done and they forgot to tighten the spark plugs. My warranty is up and I just don't want to get charged for something they shat the bed on

I had the vanos recall done a few weeks ago and have a BMS CP. So before the work was done, I told my SA about the CP and asked if there was any need to remove it and replace with the stock one (previously, one of their techs recommended that I put back on the stock one just in case BMW of NA happened to be walking through their service bays - he was paranoid about BMW of NA voiding warranties apparently). The SA said that I could leave the BMS CP in place and that the work didn't affect that part of the engine.

They do NOT need to remove your charge pipe. It's basically a valve cover gasket job + replacing 8 little bolts. You think they're going to go out of the way and remove extra components they don't need? They also do NOT NEED to remove the spark plugs and will not do a courtesy re-torqueing of them either just for shits n' giggles. That other forum member is an idiot.

Don't blame the dealership for shit that was already bound to go bad on your POS regardless.

oi POS, maybe you don't know how to read, the dealership admitted to taking the spark plugs out for the VANOS recall job, look up my post again.

Who pissed in your cereal? My question was to inquire because I didn't know what the procedure entails. If you're going to drop knowledge then do so otherwise keep the rest to yourself and miss me with that bull****

exhaust vanos has to be removed in order to get to the bolts, this is why they replace both vanos units just it case while they are at it. They don't replace just the bolts

Excuse me? If your technicians require honestly removing the exhaust vanos unit to access the 4 bolts then your shop has a huge problem.

The only part required is a new valve cover gasket and 8 new bolts. That's all UNLESS there are issues with either the exhaust or intake units such as bolts being loose or sheared off already. They do not replace both units "just because they're already there." BMW won't reimburse for that.

That's exactly what my SA said.
Got my car this morning and the only thing it was changed was the bolts and new valve cover gasket.

The dealership is perfect in every way, no one could've screwed something up, and his car is totally not unique and will have no other complications that require some extra work when working on it as opposed to when they worked on your car?

Be less of a condescending asshole next time you attempt to say something constructive.

Actually you are wrong there because one of my VANOS bolts popped and they took my engine apart as well as the oil pan and REMOVED the spark plugs. Matter of fact they gave me new ones. Every case is different so please don't post nonsense.

I never heard from my dealership so I called today and get scheduled to have the work performed next week. They indicated that it is a "2 day job".. hum?

In 2,500 miles I am in need of maintenance; oil, air filter, and spark plugs. I had asked if they could do that work at this time and they said it might be a possibility. What are the chances of them doing the maintenance work now - I really don't want to take it back in a month.

Exhaust vanos unit must be removed in order to get to the bolts. As far as I know, dealer changes two new vanos units. There is no part number for the bolts, they come bolted already on the new vanos units.

From my experience at the dealer, they will not perform any maintenance under the included plan (i.e. free) unless the CBS says it is needed. They scan your key and it tells them what the car says is due. If it is not due (within a certain number of miles or time) then they will not do it for free.

Had my recall done this past Monday, no mention on the paperwork of anything other than various bolts and a gasket.......... But my car do seem as though it's more responsive and my surging in reverse has seemed to have disappeared. I should add that I dropped it off at 8am and it was not done until 5pm. ( I was there at 4.45 and the tech still had the hood open and typing on his workstation computer....? )

Got the call from the dealer today about the recall. They said to schedule a loaner vehicle because it may be longer than a full day job.

Just got my second VANOS letter. Hopefully the loaner is a 435i. If they are going to keep my car for a couple days, I'll rack up a thousand miles on it!
