There's no part number for just the bolts, but the units were fixed so you are safe.

How did you notice the bolts were broken? Was there a check engine light?

when I pick up my car from being fixed I'll see. I can't believe this, I have to pay out of pocket cause the third party warranty company sees the bolts as hardware to the vanos.

Yeah, Check Engine Light came up, I drove about 4 miles to work and then another 3 to the dealership with reduced power.

Lots of great info, thanks everyone! Just a note, the screws listed above are oil pan screws, so don't get your hopes up :P

I read more and more about n55 vanos problems in general , really hoping I don't run into any problems myself.

Did anyone with early prod date N55 find a way to get this SIB work done as a preventive maintenance, or as a goodwill arrangement, even if the SIB situation below was not experienced?

SITUATION: A rattling noise can be heard from the engine compartment; the engine exhibits a loss of power; and the Service Engine Soon lamp is illuminated. One, or more of the following faults may be stored....

The dealer won't do anything as a precaution. They will only repair once the bolts have broken. That is why we have people interested in replacing the bolts as a preventative measure since it could potentially cause a lot of damage if the bolts do break.

when I talked with bmw na they were really helpful but when I complained to the manager of my dealership he was willing to work with me. the only issue I had was I have 85k so it's way outside the 50k warranty so he couldn't budge. I told him"so does bmw just wait until they break off and then fix them?" and he replied,"no but this SIB is a recommended way of fixing it, not saying it needs to be fixed." so I said,"this should of been addressed when I was within the warranty." manager replied,"well it's not a thing we can see without taking apart then engine."

from my experience I would take your car in with the SIB, it's a big deal that they should fix it and complain to them and how they operate. I payed $3700 two days ago for this crap, so frustrated but now it runs really well and smooth!
I also learned that a downpipe with the n55 creates idle issues.

I am impressed with the miles you have 85k. What other major issues have you had with your car?

yeah I'm not sure what the previous owner did. I've just had the HFPF go out but that's under a recall. that's it since I've owned it-60k+
I'm pretty sad about not being able to use a catless DP, has anyone else experienced this?

Small Update:

I got the new bolts in the mail.

These are steel class 8.8. Should be the exact same size as the original ones.

Anyone stumble upon any pics of the valve cover removed on an actual N55 engine? It's hard to tell if we can get to the bolts from the pictures so far in this thread.

Ive ordered the transmission and engine magnetic drain bolt from http://www.drainplugmagnets.com/.

This is obviously not a cure, but cant hurt if the VANOS bolt heads ever pop, and fall in the oil pan, by pure luck.

Since my N55 is in the dreaded production date range (May 2010), I will eventually be doing the Vanos bolt replacement fix as a DIY, maybe before the base warranty ends.

Really hoping to see someone take the plunge soon, and document his DIY procedure.

As per the SIB include in this thread, these are the N55 engines at risk.

MODEL
E70 produced from 2/2010 to 12/2010
E71 produced from 2/2010 to 12/2010
E82 and E88 produced from 2/2010 to 12/2010
E90, E91, E92 and E93 produced from 2/2010 to 12/2010
F07 535i produced from 2/2010 to 12/2010
F10 535i produced from 2/2010 to12/2010
F12 and F13 produced from 2/2010 to 12/2010
F25 produced from 2/2010 to 12/2010

Just need to check your Production date. Do this with the last 7 VIN digits againt REALOEM.COM ...

Then, if you are in the hit list, use your best PR skills to convince your Service Advisor, or his manager to get this SIB implemented as a preventive maintenance. I dont think any members have succeeded, unless the issue has actually occurred under base warranty.

Im not a mechanical engineer, but I assume that specific bolt material is critical (must mate with gear material, must not expand over a specific level when heated, must resist to vibration, etc).

Please take pictures of the steps leading up to your valve cover removal!

Interesting is there an actual sib number or anything I can bring to my SA ? He is a nice guy but he will most likely wanna see something I can bring him
