i love the z8, hate the alpina version though, talk about slush box

far from rare too, when they were first out. i would see them all the time. now since most people who still own them, keep them garaged, i dont see them as oftern

Great car, by no means the rarest BMW out there.

Maybe in North America but there were 8,000 Z1s made compared to 5,703 Z8s. Z8 is more rare but I think the M1 is one of the rarest (456 made) along with the E36 M3 LTW (<120).

Alpina turned it into a cruiser, as they didn't do anything to improve the handling, took the S62 heart out, and also made it a slush box. Equals pretty cruiser.

While the real Z8s with the S62 aren't as rare I love them more.

There is a Top Gear review of the Alpina from around 2002, that might be on youtube. Clarkson didn't like either version of the car.
so the Alpina roadster didn't use the S62 (Z8/e39 M5 motor)? they literally replaced it with something else? i did not know that...i was always under the impression that Alpina just slightly de-tuned the S62.

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
Instead of the original six speed manual and 4.9 liter (S62) engine featured in earlier Z8's, the Alpina came only as an automatic, using a 5-speed BMW Steptronic transmission allied to a downgraded 4.8L Alpina-tuned V8 motor from the Alpina E39 B10 V8 S.

thanks for the additional info, but that doesn't entirely answer my question, and unfortunately just leads me to more questions. so without further ado, what exactly was the V8 from the e39 Alpina B10? was it 1) a de-tuned version of the S62, 2) a similar V8 that was derived from the S62, or 3) a completely different motor altogether?

i mean, i understand that the Alpina motor's displacement is slightly less than the S62's, but i don't know if that's due to a different bore, stroke, or combination thereof. i would imagine for simplicity's sake that its just a difference in stroke...which would mean that the Alpina motor could very well be an S62 block with a shortened stroke, and not necessarily an entirely different block. but that's ultimately what i'm trying to find out.

Your answer is 3) completely different motor than the S62. It was the Alpina (a tuning company) version of the M62, the motor from the X5 4.6is, bored out to 4.8l. (Oddly, BMW did the same thing at about the same time, to create another motor, the N62, used in the X5 4.8is, but it made less power than the Alpina lump.) Looks like you can buy one for the low, low price of $62k!

It isn't the rarest

That is a rare BMW, but i have seen a model just like it before. It was parked at a gated mansion on the beach at the Gulf. The rarest would be the BMW GINA light. On a different I am new to this forum, but is this forum only for new BMW's, because I have not seen a post about an older BMW and no user has a BMW older than an 06

lol bro nice cars. Saw that alpina z8 at a dealership once.

Just curious.

Whats to stop someone looking up the cars registration,
getting the address,
kidnapping you and demanding a ransom from your uncle?

Remember I'm just curious..

While I like the looks, most reviews comment on how the Z8 never really handled like a BMW.
