Its spring and the counterfeit ///M cars are blooming…

I was out for a Sunday drive in my M3 this morning and came upon a TiAg E92 328xi that was debadged except for an “M” emblem on the trunk lid. He backed off after I merged in front of him. I really can’t understand why people risk public humiliation by turning their ordinary 3-Series BMWs into counterfeit ///M cars like that.

This afternoon, my neighbor let me drive his 1965 Shelby Cobra Roadster with the 427 FE Side Oiler engine. The car is a genuine Shelby Cobra, not a replica. The engine outputs 600 hp at the flywheel and the car is amazingly fast. He’s been promising to let me drive it for a while but today was the day. I only drove it about 5 miles but it was a privilege and a pleasure to drive such a legendary vehicle with a storied racing history. The car is a pure, unrefined, sports car with no power accessories, not even power brakes. I immediately noticed that the brake pedal and throttle aren’t close enough to heel and toe downshift, but that was the only minor imperfection that I noted in the car. I told him he could drive my E46 M3 in return, but he politely declined.

Other than seeing the bogus “M3”, it was a great 1st (full) day of spring for driving…

The car is a Cobra Roadster with an aluminum body (produced by Shelby American Motorsports). The car has a 1965 VIN, but it was finally assembled a few years ago. Carroll Shelby actually signed the bill of sale.

I'm against the posers too but just an ///M badge on the trunk does not make him a poser.
Does this make me a poser?

Well at least he didn't put a "M3" just an "M" maybe he had the M-Package.

Debadging a BMW is somewhat commendable. Debadging a 328xi and then going out of your way to acquire an “M” badge and applying it to your trunk lid is posing.

Even if it was an “M-Sport”, it’s not an ///M by any stretch of the imagination. Drivers with extra “M” badges stuck on their 3-Series BMWs just come across as being delusional to me…

You can have all the ///M badges you want on the inside, if ya got the parts. NOT on the outside. Unless it's actually an ///M car. What is so hard about this?

It's like all the STi badges I see on base model Imprezas because they bought a wing for it. Not cool and very bad taste.

I drove several 289 and one 427 versions in the 70s. The 289 version was actually more fun to drive because you could hammer it and not just light up the tires.

My neighbor said his car will light up the tires in all 4 gears (I didn't verify it though). I once drove a 1966 Shelby GT350 Mustang when I was in college. It had the 289cid/350hp engine, and that was a really great experience too. I wish I had the money back then to afford it, but I probably would have crashed it anyway.

If you go out of the way to buy extra M/ badges, your posing. Just be satisfied you have a BMW to begin with people!
