How does the USB music work if you go without the Tech Package (no NAV, so I assume no HD storage)? Are you just keeping the USB stick plugged in the whole time? And where is the port?

You should be able to use a USB drive

For FAT32 the maximum volume size should be 2TB. The device probably won't mount if it requests more than 500mA, so bus-powered hard drives probably will not work. However, SSD's in a bus-powered enclosure might, since they should draw under 200mA. I'll test when I get my 335i in a couple of months...

I wouldn't worry. Someone would need to specifically design a virus to harm this system as well as method for it to replicate onto your USB drive. If it did happen BMW would simply replace the drive and related components. |

I have a 750G external HDD connected to the USB in the center armrest. I popped the plastic piece where you would plug in the 3.5mm jack. I then disconnected the USB connection from that piece and carefully put my HDD down into the space open by taking that piece out. I have about 60G worth of music on the HDD and it reads all the files. If I change from one device to the other when I go back to the HDD it plays right where it left off when I switched to CD etc...

I hooked up a 256GB SSD in a USB 3.0 enclosure w/ 2 usb plugs (data + power) and the drive worked. One point of caution w/ SSDs - my drive died b/c of sudden loss of power (ie. turning off the car). SSDs do some garbage collection on their own so they seem to be a little sensitive to sudden power cycling. My SSD lasted all of 2 days before it went down in Germany - thankfully Crucial is replacing it. I didn't have the 2nd usb plug plugged in to the 12v -> USB port I connected to the rear seat 12v socket. If I use that 2nd plug as well in the rear seat socket, if the car turns off, the drive will still have power to do whatever it needs to do (and the Crucial tech seems to think so).
Of course, no such issues if you're using a USB stick - used a 16GB w/o any issues after the SSD went down.

Since the system is not an operating system like Windows, some of USB sticks may not work with larger capacity. We already have one case with 8GB which works perfectly on PC but not with BMW.

Assuming the device does not draw more then 500mA, it comes down to which filesystems that BMW supports.
Look for the maximum filesystem size http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compari...systems#Limits Possible filesystems that they *may* support: FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, HFS Plus Somebody already commented that NTFS apparently does not work. For instance FAT32 filesystems can be up to 2TB, but you may have problems *creating* such a filesystem larger then 32GB *edit* ohh and be aware that you can either format a device directly with a filesystem, or partition it and create filesystems on it. Not everything supports partitioned devices, and even if they do there are different partitioning schemes... |
