it's a VW thing, they love doing it to old ones

I guess if you have a car that's in rough shape, but mechanically sound it will add character

rust is bad though, it will eventually eat through the metal

The more I look at it the more confused I am about whether it's actual rust or a rust styled paint job

The difference is usually the old VWs come out of barns or fields that way and then get updated mechanicals. This is intentionally making it look like an old one out of a barn or field... There's a difference between "earned" patina and fake patina.

Old VWs, like vintage hot rods, have been doing this for decades not as a "look" but as a byproduct of how their owners built their cars: mechanical function firts, then looks second.

The bugs in this photo earned their patina through actual aging:

While it is real rust, Mike's E28 was faked to look that way. To me, it loses some of the artistic integrity he was trying to achieve.

.

It actually goes back several decades, and started more from old customs being taken to shows before restoration in an attempt to sell them than an attempt to be cool. Obviously the old VWs got the same treatment, but the term "Rat Rod" goes way back to some old Hot Rod Magazine articles from the late '70s.

Personally I hate it when it's faked like this BMW, but I think it's cool on something like this (and even that Bug you posted)

Amazing? I'd say "ruined" is a more accurate term.

I don't get what's amazing about stripping a car down to the metal and then letting it rust. It's not like there's a lot of talent involved.
