I don't get it. This will compete with highly successful Mini brand which has tradition on it's side unlike, Coke Zero....I meant BMW Zero.

Is there something we're not being told here? If BMW has a FWD 1, perhaps that would make it easier for them to share platforms with some other manufacturer of FWD Golf-class cars, or even worse, easier to *gulp!* merge with some other manufacturer of FWD Golf-class cars...

Just planting the seed here people.

Added thought: And if this 0 Series is a reaction to Audi's A1, what will BMW do if Audi suddenly bring out an A0? A Sub0 Series?

I was so waiting for someone to point out that! Yeah, they have M-suvs too, ans a rumored V6, a V8 and Turbos tooo. Words don't mean nothing, ultimate driving machine, inline motors, rear wheel etc is all marketing bull shit. Sorry so many of you got fooled for so long. Drunk their cool-aide didn't you.

Hehe, I can relate regarding the nightmares.

The article was nothing more than speculation (I thought), but things like this really make me wonder.

Guess we are a bunch of whining purist. The idea of a BMW going the way of VW is very disturbing to us....[gasp] a front wheel drive....[!@#$!@#$] platform sharing!

These are things that are coming weather we like it or not. They even have a name for the change in philosophy....it's call Efficient Dynamics.

I think that being offending by the 0 series makes one a whining badge purist.

But the possibility of FWD in the 1 series is totally different. If they, instead, offered x-drive as an option on the car, I wouldn't care. It's that they are considering destroying the car I love that pisses me off.

BMW didn't even bring the X5M and X6M to the Detroit Auto Show because they were embarrassed of them.
Vision EfficientDynamics... were we not told that was going into production?...obviously a more practical design but the concept is all there. itll be a superhybrid car lol

Once again agreed with bluejaypanther. The so-called 0 Series will be a totally new car (ignoring that it will be based off of the next Mini for a second), and as such they can do with it whatever they want. The FWD thing is a bit touchy, but that's fine, as I said, it's a completely new car in its own segment and if it makes them money, all the better.

The 1 Series though, that's already an established formula. One of its biggest selling points is RWD capability in a segment made up mostly of FWD copies. What would it possibly be able to offer if it too suddenly becomes FWD?
Once more, the competition has been doing wrong-wheel-drive for decades now. Jumping on the bandwagon will not do BMW any favors as a) they'll likely lose established customers, b) they'll need to find a new pitch why people should buy it when potential clients can get the same basic concept elsewhere for cheaper and c) so long M variant (assuming the M division has no FWD plans of their own...).

The only likely advantage I can fathom is that going FWD in the next 1 could maybe drive down costs since they'll probably be able to share components between Mini, 0, 1 and likely a third-party manufacturer as well, but even that makes little sense as the current 1 shares lots of components with the current 3. Why not just do the same thing with the next 3?

Btw, if I'm rambling on too much let me know, I have a knack to get worked up a bit about these things

I'm pretty sure a RWD mini would be tricky to drive hard by the general public without it spinning out because of such a small wheelbase. But I agree the 0-series shouldn't be fwd if it's going to carry the BMW name.

Talking about city microcars, BMW has Isetta in its history, appearing around 1955. A four-stroke one-cylinder, 250cc motorcycle engine generating 13 hp. But it was not called 0-series and it was powered like a WV - engine in the trunk, driving the back wheels.

UHM CALM DOWN PEOPLE

LOL at all the overreactors saying they will bail BMW cars altogether if they make a FWD 0-series You are probably also the same guys saying you aren't buying the badge for its image.

Why would you go buy an Audi or another make just because BMW is going to make a FWD 0-series. That still leaves the 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, Z, X cars as NON-FWD cars! Will BMW all of the sudden stop making great driving RWD cars just because of a FWD 0-series? NO. And who even said the 0-series is coming to the US anyways??

Stop jumping off a bridge just because of this news sheeesh!

+1
Audi has already been using a6 and maybe a4's with FWD, unless i'm mistaken... but it's in their lower models.. like entry a6 and entry a4, definitely on a3
