Hookah Charcoal

What type of charcoal do you guys use on your hookah? Seems like ever type I try either doesn't light up quick or tastes like shit. Anyone know of a good brand that lights quick and doesn't taste bad?

Avoid the self igniting coals if you can they contain alot of contaminants that you probably shouldnt be hitting the hookah while its still burning (popping). Coals that require a grill to heat up are the most practical/healthy way to go plus theres half as less ash when you use them.

i agree with spencer. self lighting coals are only good for their convenience imo. if all you have are self lighting coals, i recommend that you dont light them ON the screen especially if your bowl is already packed. try lighting them in the tray and give them a minute or two to burn completely. only after they have finished self lighting should you place them on the screen

Non quicklites always taste better, but I really like the "Golden Coals" quicklites from Hookah-Shisha.com because I'm a lazy ass. I don't notice any charcoal flavor from them. Just be sure you let them light completely before putting them on your bowl and smoking. Definitely get at least a couple rolls from them and try it out. I have a box of them on the table next to me.

Edit: Damn, just had to fire it up because of this post, haha. Actually, I'll probably get non-quicklites next time since I start mine on the stove anyway so that they get hot enough.

Honestly manual lighting coals dont take as long as they seem. Just torch it on your stove on HI for approximately 30 seconds and that thing should be cherried enough on the bottom to spread to the rest of the coal. Personally I like to cherry one side of the coal and let it spread, the heat is more residual that way making it much easier to deal with the ash and most importantly not burning the hookah tobacco. If you do it this way you wont lose too much flavor, the tobacco will last longer, and you can easily take fat rips without scorching too much of the tobacco.

Word to the top post^^^ I just got my hookah going because of this thread hahah

Take it from me, lol. Im at hooka Lounge or Ramziz every weekend. The best ones are the round long shaped or the wood "like" ones, those hit the best.

Btw, the "Quick Starts," are very bad, they contain poisonous chemicals. My friends dad got poisend from the quick starts and he regrets buying them

Word, the ones that look like theyre made out of wood are the best coals I have ever experienced. I have no idea where you can get them though but if you spot them pick them you will not regret it. There's basically no ash, very nice residual heat, and they burn for a longgggg time.

Edit:: We should have a hooka meet Im so so so down.

Also, I agree that "Quick Starts," are very bad. But I think they are very conveniant as far as going somewhere and the only thing you have is "Quick Starts." Other then that dont use it.

In Pasadena and Glendale I know good places for Charcoal and Flavors. Star Buzz flavors are the best

PLanet Tobacco is over rated. The place im talking about is on Glenoaks and its one building right before 7-11, I dont remember the name. It has its own parking, they have bomb flavors and charcoals.

A good flavore is starbuzz Watermelon and very litlle Mint. Those two together are very lol. If you pack it right, you can get light-headed very fast

Quicklites really aren't that bad if you don't start smoking them when they are still sparking. That's when they are sparking off gun powder and crap. Once that's done you'll be fine, but real coals are going to taste better still.

Starbuzz is pretty good, that's what I have now. A lot of people rave about their White Peach, and it tastes good, but it gives me the most ridiculously bad headache that will just keep getting worse and worse until I can't even get up without being in pain. Needless to say, I'm done with it. The Blue Mist is a nice change up flavor, and X on the Beach is pretty good too. They are all a bit sweet for every day smokes though. Romman makes pretty good tobaccos.

For the quick start coals, just take your tongs and a lighter and light those babies up and hold them with the tongs for about 3-4 minutes. I usually try and blow off all the black crap to expose the red-hot substance underneath, and then I'll put it on top. Also, it might be tasting like crap also if you don't regulate the heat well enough....burning the content in the bowl will just add a charcoal flavor. I usually will put half the coal off to the side as a more of an indirect heat source.
