Maximum wheel offset

Can anyone say how much I can change the offset from standard before a) the steering is affected, b) suspension / bearing wear is caused?

I'm fitting a winter tyre set and have been offered 8" ET30. The OEM is 8" ET48. This puts the wheels 18mm further from the car's centre line out of a total tread width of 235mm. I have no idea if this amount is significant or not.

Clearances are OK (obviously) and they look OK, but I don't know - you do read about bump-steer, torque-steer, bearing wear etc...

Thanks

Not sure about the technical side but from a legal side the tyres have to covered by the cars bodywork, the bodywork is not just the top but all the way round the wheel arch. Depending on the tyre width you may have issues with too much offset.

The offset on the OEM 18x8 wheels is ET43 (not 48). So you're dealing with a difference of 13mm.

I grabbed a set of OEM winters from a 7-series - 245/50/18 Dunlops on 18x8 ET30 style 238. They fit nicely and steering feels the same.

I'd be interested to hear any opinions on wear as well to see if I need to be concerned. So far, I'm not too worried.

Tangsta, thanks for this info - you're right, OEM is ET43 not ET48. I think this is close enough.
