Thanks n55x3!
I guess I was trying to solve the unsolvable....an all season tire that really works in the snow. Looks like dedicated snow tires are preferable. Last edited by BigJake; 12-09-2014 at 09:00 AM.. |

I was thinking of sticking with RFT and getting the RE960AS I had in my 3 series but it drove on rails so said no and the rating in TR are horrible (they don't seem to lie). Last option was the Michelin Primacy MXM4 ZP (comes in RFT and non-RFT flavor) but after finding an amazing deal on the DWS i couldn't say no to something I had proven already. Like n55x3 prefers the A/S 3 as I know others that do due to its top notch handling performance, i am not willing to give up my snow performance just yet but i think since we have X3 xDrive it might be able to do just fine in the snow. Let's see how it plays, as my friend has A/S 3 but already had to replace them during the first year due to bubbling and he loves it but says tread wear is pretty high as well.

Nothing beats dedicated seasons, but with the crazy weather we have in North East (today cold, tomorrow mild with rain, next day snow, following 50 with sun) and some of us not having the time, money or garage to deal with dedicated we have to be glad Continental has brought the DWS for the last 4yrs and saved a lot of our lives.

Last winter we had what I would consider an 'epic' winter here in Ohio. Snow on the ground for weeks at a time, side streets unplowed and just compacted in many cases. On the really bad days I skipped driving my RWD 335i and drove the X3 with RE960AS and they were pretty good. Never once was I worried about getting stuck or sliding off the road, even in deeper snow. If we had DWS on there during those days I'm sure I would have felt even more comfortable than with the RE960AS. Furthermore, if my crystal ball was working and told me the next 3-4 winters would be the same or worse no doubt I'd have gone with DWS. Since I consider our last winter an anomaly I went with a more performance oriented tire. I really don't think you can go wrong with either one at the end of the day. All the tires mentioned in this thread are highly rated on tirerack. |

I was looking at the DWS but decided to go with dedicated winter set for optimal performance. Just replaced the ls2's with Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3's (non-run flat) and the difference is amazing right of the bat, braking, accelerating and steering feel much more direct and connected. Wet cornering grip much better than gy's, haven't had snow to test that but I highly highly doubt they will be worse than the gy's

Thanks ROBNYC and Csurf. We're in the same area with the same crap to drive in.
I go to VT in the winter and I'll tell you, the Eagle LS tires just ain't that great in the snow. I never thought I'd consider 'dedicated' winter tires, but never say never. |

Funny story- called my dealer for the hell of it and asked them to order me the DWS. They said they can't because it's not a BMW approved tire (i.e. run flat)

Now last week after having my DWS driving in different highways with rain coming down not as hard but very constant and since it was raining prior hours there was no dry areas. I was able to drive 60-75 in all lanes even passing through puddles my X3 w/ DWS felt like there was no rain. Quote:
Definitely lol Congrats !!!

Never used the slime kit for flats before... what's the limitation with these kits? Are they only good for punctures or something similar? Driving on NYC roads, I'm more concern about huge pot holes cutting up the side walls.

Bumping this as I have had the Sottozero's Serie II on our X3. They were solid and I ran them year round. I believe running them year round in Denver I would have ended up at about 15,000-20,000 miles out of them before replacement.
Overall, I'd say they weren't much better than the DWS' I've used in the past. That said, I just ordered DWS' this time. |
