TPMS Malfunction?

So i just installed my winter setup for the first time, bought it from a guy on the forums and it was a Rial Salerno w/ TPMS built on. The rims may be a couple years old so i guess the TPMS might be as well. I put them on the car, inflated all 4 to spec and reset TPMS. the system reset and just says TPMS Malfunction and all the wheels are inflated.

what do i do? are my sensors bad? how do i know? am i doing something wrong? i read 2010 sensors are different from 2009 and before? are the batteries dead in the sensors?

What do i do?

Sounds like the sensors in your wheels are faulty. Try resetting the system, after replacing one stock wheel at a time. I know it sucks but that's the only way I can think of the test the sensors.

When the system functions properly, you'll know which wheel has a bad sensor.

This! You need new style sensors.

You answered your own question. BMW changed the sensors for the 2010 model year, so you need new sensors.

Wow that sucks. So is there any way to tell which sensors are in the wheels? I would like to know so if I sell my wheels, I can provide the correct info.

If the wheels came from an 07, 08 or 09 then you have the "old style." If they came from an 2010 or 11 then they are new style. I don't believe the valve stems are different so there is no visual way of telling.

Well it looks like I'll never know lol. I don't know what year the previous owner's car was.

I guess next time I mount new tires I'll have a look/take them off.
