Keyless Start - Forget the engine is running

My father in law keeps forgetting to turn off the engine on his new 2010 7er. Is there an warning that can set.

Not with comfort access.

OP: I suggest to tell him to start using the key instead of going keyless.

It has to. If someone hops in your car, turns the engine on and tries driving away, it has to shut off?

I do this all the time. Start my car with my comfort access and get up out the car. It just gives a warning light. The car stays running otherwise.

Put a post it on the dash telling him to stop the engine until he gets in the habit of doing it.

What? How would they turn on the engine without the key? And if they have the key why would it shut off?

So if the car is running, and you get out and leave with the key does it stop running when it no longer senses the key? Furthermore, if it does not shut off, can someone get in, put it in gear/drive and take it?

i have comfort access and can get out of the car and walk away and it stays running, i think once you get a certain distance away it turns off? im not sure. I just get out close the door and touch the door handle and the car will lock and then it will turn everything off.

nope, when my shop did a test drive after they installed my suspension, they forgot the key inside the shop..was able to drive all the way a 1km stretch and back...no problems...
we also tried this with my fathers X5, when we were arguing with our Sales associate that it wouldn't turn off with the key away, he took it out from delivery bay all the way to parking lot, car didn't turn off

the only issue i had was, the car didn't recognize the key till I plugged it in and drove for about 20minutes..

I turned on the engine and left the key inside my house one time (by mistake). Drove off about 1 mile without the key. After I parked my car, that's when I realize I didn't have the key with me.

It won't turn off for a reason. Imagine the battery in the FOB dying on you while driving. You would probably prefer to drive somewhere to replace the battery than to be stranded.

And I do use it, for instance when cold out and the car is still cold. I may stop at a convienece store and will leave it running but you can lock it so it is safe. Just a little warning light on the i-Drive which goes away quickly.

Yep. It would be a major safety hazard if it turned off when key is not detected. There could be any number of things that could cause the key to not be detected, like failure of the sensors in the car, transmitter in the fob, fob battery dying, etc etc.

Kensta335 I cannot tell what the second meaning of your trick display pic is LOL
(sorry for derailing the thread a bit.. but maybe more than one person is wondering)

Oh and to contribute.. My M3 just gives a warning also when the car is on and key is elsewhere.. has anyone tried opening their window, holding their key outside and try to start the car? I think i will do that and see.
