Should I Keep my 335XI or get the M3?

A little input please....

So this weekend my 1 month old 335XI broke down on me leaving me on the side of the highway (I was on heading on vacation.) The car started to sputter and the "engine malfunction/reduced power" code came on. It was idling very rough and when I let it sit for 30 minutes it still did the same thing. I had to be towed to the nearest dealer who couldn't even give me a loaner. I went and rented a ford focus (haha ) and tried to continue on with my trip. Finally, when the dealer got the car in to the shop they said they could find nothing but an engine misfire in cylinder 2 and that a few weeks previous I ran the car low on gas (still had 25km in the tank). They attributed it to that (I figured it was the HPFP for sure) and could not explain what happened very well. I was quite livid that was all they could tell me and were giving the car back to me the same way it was towed to them. I was going to tune my car (procede or dinan) but now I don't feel confident in it and considering picking up an M3 instead. I can get the power and everything I want in the M3 without messing with warranty unlike the seemingly touchy 335 and its infamous 29.2 and MSD81. BMW has scared me away from tuning.

Now I am pondering to fork out the cash for the M3 or stick with the 335... What should I do?

Are they going to lemon your 335xi? Or you are taking a loss? If money is no issue then yes take the M3

I will have to talk to my dealer, I am not sure what is needed here in Canada to consider it a lemon

I've heard of a number of people who have run their car beyond the displayed remaining range to the point it just says -- miles/km without issue. But in BMW's defense...doesn't the manual recommend not running the tank below 50km remaining in order to prevent any possibility of engine damage? OP I don't mean to chastise you so please don't get me wrong, I'm just putting on my two cents.

Edit: I do admit though that it's scary the car records how low we've run the tank for x number of past weeks among other things.

I haven't read anything that is why I didn't understand the issue. Especially since that was weeks ago and like 5 tanks of gas later. Can't see how it would cause a problem now and yes I am with you about how they can tell how much gas we run in our car!

It was initially, but I am reconsidering just putting some good winter tires on it and not driving like a maniac, seems to work for most people here in Canada (excluding all 4X4 truck drivers here).

Don't get the M3! Then you're just falling for BMW's B.S.! This is exactly what they want you to do, get pissed that you can't mod your 335 and get an M3 instead. Just get nasty with the dealer and get then to find the damn problem, and then wait until your warranty is up to mod.

Disagree. The M3 is not BMW BS. Not everything is a scheme.

AMJ, give the 335xi a break. I've had mine for 3 months no and luv it and no probs.

The M3 in Edmonton will be a disaster. There will be days, I guaratee, that you will not be able to drive the car in town. The xi is the ultimate E'town ride.

Don't get the M3, the more I read the reviews the more I realize it is overpriced, over hyped and over valued. The M5/M6 is a true M car but the M3 lacks torque and just is not the M car it should be.

That said, if the M is your thing get it but realize that there are a dozen or more 335s in town that will kick your *ss for way less money and drama.

GL but if you want a M car, buy a used M5/M6.

Better yet, get an M3 from a dis-enchanted future M3 owner who got kicked by a 335.

Too much money for a marginal increase in everyday performance.

Save your money and get a facelifted 997.

No, could have easily bought one, no prob there.

Not worth the $$$ compared to a daily driver I can drive all year round.

If they had a M3x with DKG then bring it, but it'll be $100k Cdn so I'd rather get an M5.
