Advice on upsizing tires 2012 F30
I bought an F30 about a year ago and this is my first bimmer. Lately I have been thinking of upsizing my tires. I currently have 17" OEM and I am planning to upsize it to at least a 19" or 20".
My question is, how is this going to affect my car's performance. Friends are telling me that the ride might be a little rougher if I choose to upsize. I like that the car is very smooth and I can't barely feel the bumps on the road, is that going to be compromised if I upsize the tires? Would it be worth it? By the way, I do a lot of highway driving. Sometimes, 8-9hrs highway driving. Thanks |

More knowledgeable folks will be able to help with offsets, but in general you never want to go more than +2 meaning 19s max.
If you are on the base model suspension - which I assume you are with 17s - then the wheel gap will be pretty noticeable with anything larger than 18s, so you may want to consider and account for a slight suspension drop to close the wheel well gap. I have the sport package which lowers about an inch from the factory and the gap is perfect with the sport 18s. Jimbo |

I would not recommend anything more than 18. 19 would have too low of a tire sidewall and this is going to be a gamble each winter whether you'll break a wheel or not due to potholes. IMO the car looks awesome with 18. Just right. 19 is pushing it in a cold climate. Ok in Germany where roads are great but not so much here. 20 just looks comically huge, and obviously the "tires" will be nothing more than a thin strip of rubber at those sizes.

Post in the tires area. Plenty of people and vendors can give good advice.
Just for reference I, running a 2012 335 sport line that came with square 18s on 225/45/18s. I'm run 19x9 up front and 19x10 in the rear with 235/40 and 265/35 tires respectively. Most tend to run smaller sidewall with wider tires but I wanted to close the wheel gap a bit while running greater than 30 widths. Lots of options but a nice set of wheels make a pretty big visual impression. Better and wider tires and lightweight wheels make a difference in performance also. |

I'd have to dig up a poor quality pic I had from when I got them. They're not on the car right now because I've been too lazy to swap them back since the weather has gotten cold (the Mich PSS don't like freezing temps at all).
I'll probably put them back on in a couple weeks and maybe take a shot or two. That probably doesn't help you though. Lots of good shots if you search the wheels section, especially last spring/summer when it seems all of us were in the market for new wheels. My wheels are made by MORR and they have a flicker site with a ton of cars with their wheels. I think there is another poster here who has my exact same setup down to the tire size just with a different color. |

i think 18s will look good if ur keeping stock height while 19s and 20s will look better if ur going for a drop, and if u ever run 19s or 20s don't get rfts, or else u WILL suffer

Its all personal preference I guess. To say it looks comical is just your opinion FT and reality, 18s are just plain vanilla now available as a stock option on some of the most basic cars. Your assessment on the durability of 20s is inaccurate unless you are comparing cheap crap wheels. If you buy the cheapest wheel, then you get what you pay for. If you get a good quality wheel that is designed right and uses low pressure casting versus gravity casting, the wheel will not bend that easily. I had 18s before I got 20s and that was my main concern considering I was replacing an 18 once every 2-3 months on 45 series. I had my 20s for almost a year and not a single dent. Believe me I have hit my fair share of holes that I was scared to look and nada still perfect form. Then of course if you go forged, if you bend one of those, you would have bent virtually any wheel size.

I have 20s as well and love them and they do not look COMICAL. To each their own I guess. They make the car look so much better. Also, I think 19s look great as well. Anything looks better than 18s lol.
The f3xs are a different car than the e9x was, meaning that 20s on our cars would be like 19s on an e9x. So it kinda balances out in that respect.

i would go with 19s you can still run a good tire size check out velgen wheels i have them on my car love them.. great price too better customer service
