Why the GT-R FAILS. *cry*
Florida man cancels Nissan GT-R order due to 'black box'
A Florida man named Scott Weires has canceled the order for his long-awaited Nissan GT-R. Why? It's not that he was disappointed in the car's performance credentials, far from it. The problem is that the GT-R is equipped with a 'black box', similar in theory to the kind found on airplanes to help determine what went wrong in case of an accident or breakdown. By the end of 2012, car buyers won't have a choice as to whether their new car is equipped with a 'black box,' or Electronic Data Recorder -- they will be federally mandated to carry one. These devices track information that could be useful to the manufacturer in determining exactly what is, or has been, going on with a car. There are a few worries, though, that warranty claims could be denied if the automaker, Nissan in this case, deems that the car was being raced or abused in some way or by police or lawyers to determine culpability. Nissan's GT-R carries an on-board recorder that keeps track of the past few day's worth of driving and cannot be disabled. In the case of Scott Weires, an attorney no less, that was enough to look elsewhere. Would it be for you? continued: http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dl...&rssfeed=rss01 noooooooooo, just when I thought godzilla was unbeatable! :'( EDIT: Wow, Nissan denis warranty claims because "VDC was used" GTR FTL http://www.nagtroc.org/forums/index....ic=25361&st=20 Last edited by darkphantom; 10-10-2008 at 03:10 PM.. |

So if every car is gonna be equipped with it, what difference does it make if the gt-r is equipped with it? besides, even if u crash racing without a black-box, the police will most likely be able to determine that you were racing anyway. FAIL, on his part in my opinion, I would've never consider losing it (maybe not in red).

wouldn't bother me....i wouldn't cancel my order for my M3 if it had an electronic data recorder. As mentioned there is already implemented technology in place that performs the same functions.

I wouldnt get one right now either, BMW wont know how many times you launch your car and 1/4 mile it at the track... With this new on board CPU they can know if you disable traction control and void your powertrain warrantee!! F that! I am 100% sure that someone will come out with a device that can clear the recorder and then everyone will be happy, except for Nissan of course

I really wonder how long data is saved - I don't think everything will be recorded since that would require quite some memory/storage. Does anybody know how much data the E92 M3 ECU can store??

Man! when even a cell phone can have 16G of internal storage and it is less than $100 to have a 16G SD card or 32G CF card, is storage still an issue? How about a 120G solid state drive?

Woah I actually freaked when I first saw this article. My friend was going to pick up a GTR about 2 weeks ago and had to cancel his order because the contract on his job ended. His name is Scott. He lives in Florida.
Go figure.

He actually has more than enough means to get the GTR, he just decided that, given his current situation, a $100k (with markup) car isn't the best thing for him.

I highly doubt it does, and even if it does BMW wont void your warrantee because of it like Nissas will, you have to sign a piece of paper when you get a GTR that states what will void your warrantee and the traction control disble bit is on there when you sing the contract... Thats BS!

On the other hand, if they would by chance record that, they could look at that, in conjunction with seeing high speeds and redlining, to determine you were driving recklessly. |
