Would the 320i be dropped for the return of the 325i?

Garage List
All I know is that you'd be foolish to order a 335i when the 340i is coming out. Seems like an overdue development, since at launch for the F30 the 328i seemed like a better call than the 335i dollar for dollar.

Maybe this would help? Closed deck design would be huge. The N54 is open deck, a guy in KC is making 861whp with stock internals. I can't imagine the possibilities with closed deck, that would make this engine more ideal than the 2JZ.

Timing chain mounted on the back of the engine... I know this is a play for NVH, but it definitely is a huge no-no from a maintenance perspective... Let's hope the chains/chain-guides are of a good design, or else $$$$$.

A part from the timing chain tais seem to be a clever and bulletproof design.

I would like to know HOW this design will reduce carbon buildup which N54/55 are prone to

It won't, at least materially. Until they add port injectors that supplement the direct injectors, there won't be any fuel to wash the intake valves.

The N55 is already showing to be much less susceptible to this. Most N55 owners who have pulled their manifolds to do the walnut blast (myself included) have found the ports to be pretty clean with only light carbon powder buildup.

The PCV system is what is responsible for this buildup. The N54's PCV system was quite poor at properly separating out oil vapor and residue before injecting it into the intake tract. Also, it injected post turbo whereas the N55 injects in the ports themselves. Adding to this is the valvetronic system that results in no vacuum pressure in the intake manifold and a constant gas flow through the intake ports.

All of this adds up to a pretty effective system that reduces the carbon buildup in the intake ports.
