Walnut Media Blasting Service & More!!! (Eastern PA - 19087)
***CARBON BUILD UP CLEANING***
I recently bought a media blasting kit and cleaned out my intake valves along with a friends too. For those of you not familiar with the carbon build up issue on the N54 engines with direct injection, here are my results... Cylinder 2 before and after on my e90 335xi at 112k Some cylinders were actually wet with build up and in much worse condition. I immediately noticed a big change in throttle response and smoother power. I am charging $350 to do the job, as apposed to the local BMW shop that quoted me $1,300. This will cover the cost of labor and walnut media, it will not cover the following, which I recommend replacing at the same time... 1.) Intake Manifold Gaskets http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E90-335...asket/ES25805/ 2.) Throttle Body Gaskets http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E92-335...ntake/ES34178/ 3.) Spark Plugs (Should be replaced every 15k miles) http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E90-335...ES12/ES257800/ *If you want to do these addition upgrades I can provide the parts but it will be cheaper for you to buy them online and bring them. It will typically take no more than 4 hours to complete the job. The dealership said the carbon build up should be cleaned out every 45k-50k miles, depending on how hard you drive the car. The last car we cleaned out had 65k miles and almost as much build up as the car with 112k. Cost: $350 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ***JB4 AND DCI INSTALL*** We are also able to install the JB4 software and DCI intakes. Cost: $50 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ***CHARGE PIPE INSTALL*** If you are running higher boost, it won't be long until your plastic charge pipe cracks and causes a boost leak. Upgrade to a metal charge pipe to prevent this headache from occurring. Cost: $100 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ***SPARK PLUG REPLACEMENT*** Have a misfire? Typically it is caused by a bad plug, and over time it will damage your engine. Cost: $75 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you need something else done please ask, these are just some common things we work on with these N54 motors. $500 is high. Most dealers don't charge much more than that anymore, maybe $650. Plenty of local operations with tons of experience in the $300-350 range. You did a good job on yours though. I haven't seen many cleaned up that nice.

Thanks man, it took a while but I'm meticulous with this kind of stuff. And the BMW dealership quoted me $1,300 and other shops were above $600 and definitely don't do a quality job.

For anyone looking to get this done, 500 is high. Look around the area and there are a few reputable shops that will do it for less. Also all the other services could be done w/ anyone with time and checking out some DIY threads.

Nice work - the blasting job looks great.
That said, I have to agree with the other commenters. Around here (PA/MD) most people are charging around the $350 mark for walnut blasting. But best of luck!

Awesome - good on ya for going down a bit on price!
I know ModBargins just started this service for $395 (even thought they are not local - they have a post in their BLOG about it but for some reason I can't post a link). But there are a few people in the MD/NOVA area that quote in the $300-$400 range; Adam (CLEM), Luther from Flemming Auto, Mach V in Sterling, etc. Check to see what VAC charges - I am sure they are more on the expensive side and probably closer to you. I think if you stay in the $350 - $400 range you would be right at some other competitors. However, there are some indy shops charging $600-$700 so it is really up to you. Either way, it looks like you did a great job - well worth it!
