Sat nav quirks

Hi

I've had an F30 320d ED with business media since July... after 8k trouble-free miles (at around 65 mpg) there are a few quirks with the sat nav that I'd like to try and sort...

It has some daft ideas of the quickest route (my normal setting) - e.g. on the estate where I live it directs me along three sides of a square instead of directly across the fourth. All of the roads have the same speed limits etc. etc.

Also, by way of another random example, heading for North Wales from the Midlands it will direct me off the M6 at J15/16 and up the much much slower lorry-filled A500 toward the A55, even though the longer but quicker route via M6/J20 and M56 is not showing any hold-ups.

Secondly, traffic updates are often adrift of actuality: sat nav showing a long row of chevrons along a virtually empty carriageway; incorrectly reporting motorways closed and trying to redirect me off;

Does anyone know how traffic updates are received / where from / how often / can it be set to a more accurate source?

Finally, (unlike other sat navs i've used), calculated arrival times are invariably optimistic, even on clear roads, driving at the speed limit. Is there a way of tweaking this (other than driving faster) ?

Cheers

Regarding its route round your estate, is it the same thing that tomtom's do, in that it thinks your still pointing in the direction you were the last time the car moved, so it thinks it's best to carry on in that direction rather than tell you to turn around? Maybe try coming home the long way and next time you go out see which way it takes you.

I am currently waiting for delivery of my new 320d with business nav, which i though won't hav traffic updates as they're only available on professional nav. How come yours has them?

It certainly does have it's quirks. My favourite is that every time I travel clockwise past M25 J10 (A3) it tries to direct me up the slip road and then left onto the A3 southbound - do a U turn and then left onto the M25 again.

I think the Business Nav is very similar to the old BMW Mark 4 DVD based system. I can't remember the initials for the traffic service but if collected information from some FM radio stations and in particular, Classic FM. I had this in my previous car and the service seemed to be dieing with less information and that information being less reliable. Also remember the system getting its nickers in a twist on the M25 passing the A3.

The traffic service on the Pro Sat Sav gets traffic information from the internet and seems far more comprehensive and accurate than the old system.

This is what annoys me a bit. There is a stretch of the A500 through Stoke where it takes you up a slip road and back on to the main carriageway.

Interesting - I do that journey quite often and don't have that problem. What date are your maps?

No idea - will check. Car is a Sept 2012 build, and never been updated. M25's been there before the car was built though

From what I could gather from the terms and condition of the Connected Drive your car also uploads details of your journey time which in turn updates the RTTI. I'm not sure if this is the same database that the portable nav systems (TomTom, Garmin, etc) use and whether they contribute to the information but I have found it to be super accurate on my ProNav system.

On a recent trip from Newcastle to Leicester the quick option took my on the A1(M) then off on to the A614, A6097 & A46 rather than the M18 & M1... I'm guessing it made the decision on the back of RTTI as the arrival estimate was bang on...

Also the fact that the A50 into Leicester from the M1 is a total pig at the best of times, the A1 is generally faster than the M1 for most journeys, and the newly dualled A46 is a peach to drive (fast, smooth, few bottlenecks and only 1 camera between Lincoln & Leicester).
I suspect that the A614, 6097 were there just due to the roadworks currently at the A1/A46 junction, as that would have been faster.

According to my sat Nav there's been an accident on the A50 through stoke that the police are rerouting traffic, this has been every day? Now either it's a BMW issue or I really need to avoid that piece of road because it's terribly unlucky?

Before the A46 got dualled between Widmerpool and Newark, the A614/A6097 was the route of choice. However since then, you are right, the A1/A46 is now faster.

What's the story with all the average speed cameras on the A6097? They were installed months ago but they are still pointing the wrong way.
