Is the camera I bought any good?

Hi, I just bought a Canon Powershot G10 so I could take some nice pictures of my car, I don’t know anything about cameras and would like to know what you guys think about it. I didn’t want to spend too much money, so the $500 I spent on it is my max. budget. Did I make a good buy or should I return it for something else? Thanks guys.

The G10 is a great little camera. I had a G9 that I purchased for my honeymoon and it took some very good images. Since you bought it to take pictures of your car I think it's enough. If you want to get more into photography you'll want to look into a SLR. Check the POTN forums (photography-on-the.net). Lots of info there.

Have fun with it and post up some pics

I had the Canon G1 and it was awesome. Sweet sweet 3.3 megapixels.

It's really great for candids. After I got my Canon 5D MkII I couldn't help but notice that it's about 5-times bigger than my G9. You don't point that thing at people without being noticed, unless your using the telephoto and they're looking the other way.

DxO's Optics Pro software also does a great job of adjusting for many of the shortcomings of the G9 vs. a DSLR. (I'm not giving up my MkII, just saying the gap is closed a little with the software).

It's a great camera but I would have rather gotten an XTi or XSi... Just the fact that the G10 is so limited, it's also on the bigger side losing it's portability, for instance compared to a true P&S where you can fit it inside your pocket.

How is the G10 limited vs. the XTi or XSi?

If carrying it in your shirt pocket is a big priority, then, ok, that's one, but not for me. (I've always got my iPhone in my pocket for emergency shots, when I don't care about quality or just "need" a camera).

G9 I felt compared just as well compared to a xxxD body but thats neither here nor there these days. Either way, G10 is in the post.

Yeah, the G9 and G10 are pretty darn close, but someone buying today should get the 10, IMHO.

As per my opinion i would suggest u to go for Canon Powershot G10 as its very demanding now a days in market. I have Canon Powershot G10 and i didn't find any problem till as i have taken it before 4 months from UK.

Canon Powershot G10 has good reviews other than digital camera reviews and it's features is also good here, some features of Canon Powershot G10 is as under as i realized during last 4 months.
  • Good image quality
  • decent lens
  • decent product quality
  • acceptable usability
  • superior appearance
  • Functional and fun shooting design; great enthusiast-oriented feature set; very nice photo quality
  • Awesome architecture and build. Full gamut of features.

The site I trust for comparison of digital camera reviews and price comparison when it comes to consumer electronics is alaTest.com

if you can, return it and get an XSi kit for a little bit more money. Then go on ebay and pic up a 10 mp Canon Digital Elph point and shoot for $50. That way you'll have both ends covered. You'll have a cheap but good p&s camera that you wont mind carrying every where with you or leaving in your car, plus you'll have a good SLR.

Some people don't want the hassle of a DSLR and/or want something more compact than a DSLR, but they still want good image quality when they use a camera. The Elph cannot be compared to the G9 or G10 for serious picture taking. It's not even close. Go to DxO's site and see the objective performance measurements if you're uncertain.

I've now got both the G9 and a Canon 5D MkII, just moving to the 5D2 as my primary camera last December, but using the G9 for candids and situations where I can't take the 5D2. When I put pictures my wife and daughters take on their Elphs next to either of my cameras, it's a BIG let down. (I edit on a 24" Sony monitor and view on a 46" Sony Bravia LCD HDTV, so the quality difference is striking and easy to see).

The Elph is good for someone that wants something superior to there iPhone, but if you're at all serious you'll want more.

Both the G9 and G10 have smaller sensors than most DSLR's though - this is the same for most P&S cameras. This is why DSLR gives better IQ than P&S.

http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/eng...(brand3)/Canon

Whilst the quality excels a rival in the FZ28 - its no match for say an EOS 450D

Well duh, the EOS 450 is a DSLR. Many people don't want a DSLR, but still want good image quality. For them, then G10 is one of the few options with competitive quality in a compact, sophisticated package. Run the G9 or G10's RAW files through DxO's Optics Pro correction software and the P&S-to-DSLR image quality gap narrows considerably.

If image quality were your top priority you would have bought a 1D MkIII or 5D MkII with a load of L-series lenses, but you didn't,perhaps because you didn't like the bulk or cost. Almost every camera is a compromise and what you'll choose will vary with your experience, needs, pocket depth and relative priorities.
