I've been thinking about picking up a Shinola for a while, only half-decent piece of mechanical engineering to come out of Detroit in decades

So are Longines, Omega, Rado, Hamilton and Glashutte to name a few. I believe the OP mentioned whatever or everyday watches of which many are mass produced. Unless I am reading into this wrong is your issue with Swatch that of the fact it's a big conglomerate versus a manufacturer watch?

Me personally I wear a Citizen daily, if it gets beat up no worries. I have a Hamilton Jazzmaster and an older Omega SM depending on the occasion and dress if needed.

I have no issues with Swatch or Fossil. I own several of their brands... The only reason I mentioned it was the OP seemed to dismiss watches in general made by a company such as Fossil. I was simply making sure he understood that the Tissot watch he likes was in fact made by one those companies, Swatch. In fact I just bought a Certina diver watch (a Swatch brand) which is an old Swiss maker acquired by Swatch. A great tool watch at its price point...

i like the swatch company actually. i equate fossil to more of a watch provider for clothing designers. there's nothing wrong with that but i wanted suggestions for something that i felt is more dedicated to mostly watches. i'm sure it's flawed thinking but i can't help it.

i should also mention, that i own some fossil made watches because i'll buy a watch just because i like it. i think the last one i bought was ck or versace.

+1 on Seiko and Shinola

Can't go wrong with a vintage automatic diver from Seiko for everyday use.

Seiko fan here.

Steinhart also has some good watches. Swiss made. Their homage submariners look great.

since making this thread i've been looking at a few things including all the suggestions in this thread so i think you all.

i've been leaning toward a few victorinox and TechnoMarine's. technomarine's are a lil iffy for me but there's one all black, gunmetal with a rubber strap that's really calling my name.

i need to get a another watchbox first anyway because my current is full so i have time to debate.

I also wear a Tissot as an everyday watch, along with my Oakley, ESQ, or Nixon.

Pretty much any watch will be just as good and work just as well. Seiko, Citizen, Bulova, Swatch, Hamilton, Tag...the list is almost endless. When it comes to matters of a watch working effectively and having a good degree of durability, you have buy something incredibly cheap -- be it quartz or mechanical -- before you are going to find something that won't suffice effectively as a daily wearer.

Among less expensive watches, the construction of things like the case, crystal and bracelet/strap are going to be the biggest factors affecting quality. Some inexpensive watches will have very flimsy bracelets/straps and those bracelets/straps may be affixed to the case/each other with flimsy pins that will be prone to bend/snap out, others will have plastic "crystals" or cases, or cases that have coatings that scratch off easily. Such watches will, however, also have quartz movements and in that sense, they will perform as well as a quartz watch costing thousands of dollars.

Once you get past the $300 mark, however, it's rare to find such poorly crafted watches, and you certainly won't find such things from major brands. Just avoid things from outfits like Stauer or Daniel Steiger and you can just pick what you like. Even some stuff from those two makers aren't truly poor quality so much as they are just priced higher than they should be. One could say Rolex or any number of other brands are priced higher than they need be also, but the thing is that there is none of those makers' offerings will disappoint as goes construction quality and that not really so with some of what those two other brands offer.

All the best.

for me a basic watch would be around $800. i have some $300-600 watches from when i first started enjoying them but now that seems to be the cut off. i don't have any logic to apply to that, it just seems to work out that way when i get a watch. one of my boxes starts at $800 and ends around $6,000. quite the range because all of the purchases were made based on what i was feeling that day. minus the tag.

Try the Seiko Prospex "Shogun" SBDC007. It's an excellent daily wear watch.

Retails for around $1100.

i was really in the mood for black, gun medal, and rubber so i ended up picking up this techno marine for about $1200. was $1600 so that was a nice little deal.

i have other black watches but the hands are also black so it's hard to tell the time in dim light. i like the contrast this one has.

my first techno marine and so far so good imo.
