Damn, I need to get on that mailing list. A 7D for under $1300 would be nice.

thanks... can't wait to get it!

I guess I'm a little late in the game to purchase the 5DMK2 since the MK3 is supposedly around the corner. But, the way I see it is that this camera is significantly better than what I shoot with now, plus I think it'll complement my new lenses better.

Also, the 5DMK2 is still selling lightly used for like $2200 easily. I figure that once the 5DMK3 comes out, if I need to, I can always sell this one and grab that. But, I imagine the MK3 will be even more expensive than the retail price for the MK2. At potentially $3k for the MK3, this MK2 is a steal.

Yeah, I figure if I'm going to upgrade bodies, it might as well be a worthwhile jump.

I would give you mine Mark, but I just tried to add the 7D to my cart, and the code is no longer valid. I guess it's one-time use only, which sucks.

you didn't already have a MKII? I'm pretty sure the MKIII will be the same retail price. Canon doesn't do like Nikon and raise the price a bit for the successors. $5000 for D3, $5400 for D3s, etc...
i haven't even bought a 5D yet. !! Waiting for the next one.

Nope rodi... only had the nearly 7-year-old 20D. It has served me well, and I plan to continue using it when I need a crop body.

I was hoping that Canon would've announced the 5DMK3 late last year, or by this spring at the latest, but that never happened, and I got tired of waiting for it. Plus, it's hard to beat this price, so it was kind of a no-brainer for me since I've been eyeing the camera for nearly a year now.

Mark,

I just remembered, that if you're looking for a 7D I recommend going through the Canon loyalty program. You'll get 20% off the refurb price. Basically you need to call them with a broken Canon camera. It has to be broken, not just old, dirty, etc. If you don't have a cheap powershot or something you can't use, just buy one on ebay or craigslist for $10 and run it over with you car.

Sadly the 5D is no longer part of the loyalty program, so that's why I didn't go through that and instead had to wait for their stupid sales/coupons.

The 5DII comes and goes on the loyalty program, so it is hit and miss. You can hang up,get a different person and a different offering too.

nope. It used to be part of it. Now it's not. I think they stopped it late last year. Not a single person I know of (on various forums) has been able to get one through the loyalty program for some time now.

I'll have to remember that. I'm still recuperating financially from this month's outlay for the 24-105 and then our trip to MI. Maybe in the fall.

Wouldn't you know, I got a 15% off refurbs email from Canon today. You can't combine it with the $5 shipping, though. Pity I'm not in a position to buy anything this week. Expires the 6th. Anyone need a code?

The problem with the refurb site is that they charge tax, which in this state is near 7%. So a 15% discount works out 8%. Add in $16 shipping and you really need to be buying something high end to make it worth buying a refurb over buying new off Amazon or B&H. I looked at the Speedlight 430EX II and it came to just $30 less than the new price on Amazon. Why bother?

yup, that's true... it's great for higher end bodies, lenses, accessories, etc.

We are currently 2+% more than that, so <7% is a bargain.
I did buy my 300 used at a local store to support them. Then again that day they were happier to see the guy picking up the $10-15K Leica lens he ordered.

B&H has a 200mm F2.8L used for $659. Matt has one of these. He used it for the Pittsburgh Vintage GP pics. I've been thinking it might be a waste to get a 70-200mm F4 when I have out to 105mm covered already. The 200mm F2.8 would get me the long reach at a fast aperture. Hmm.

I opted for a 300 over the 70-200 because of what I like to shoot. I do have the 200 2.8L on a list of lenses that are cheap but have stellar performance. Even though you have the 10-22/24-105, it all depends on how and what you shoot. You might need that zoom on the 70-200, I know I could use it many times.
Both lenses are great and you will be happy with IQ.

That's a pretty good price. I paid $550 for mine used and it's a UM date code (1998). Stellar lens, though. Super sharp, great colors, and contrast. I also had the 70-200mm f/4L (non is) and much prefer the 200/2.8L. One thing about the 200/2.8L that I love is that it's sharp wide open. You can shoot at 2.8 all day and not be disappointed. Stop it down a bit and it just gets better.

I'm likely going to regret it, but I just sold mine to fund a 135mm f/2L, which should be here next Tuesday

Didn't you just get the 200 a few weeks ago? Did you find it too confining?

Yeah, I've had it for a month or so. I've been on a lens buying/selling spree recently. I really enjoyed the 200/2.8, though. Definitely in my top few lenses. The only reason I sold it was because I want to get a little more into portraits (and maybe some paid work) and I found the 200 a little long for that.
