2009 BMW 335d - Short Take Road Test



It’s no secret that we love BMWs. Indeed, browse any auto-enthusiast message board and you’ll no doubt read about the piles of fresh $100 bills that arrive in our office every month from some German dude named Bayerische M. Werke. The reality, though, is that bribes are unnecessary, especially in the case of the sensational 3-series. It’s the benchmark vehicle for a benchmark company, and a car we’ve called “terrific,” “magical,” “world-class,” “definitive,” and “a wing-footed god.” (Although even we admit that that last one might be a bit much.)

Today, we add a new descriptor to our 3-series vocabulary: torquey sumbitch. For 2009, BMW has finally seen fit to offer a compression-ignition 3 in the U.S., gifting upon us its twin-turbo 3.0-liter diesel engine, which pumps out a goodly sum of power (265 hp @ 4200 rpm) and a wicked level of twist (425 lb-ft @ 1750 rpm). Compared to a regular 335i sedan, which boasts 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque, the 335d has 42 percent more torque while sacrificing just 9 percent in the power department. That, friends, is the sort of compromise we can live with.

I really would love to see how this thing drives! Torque torque torque!

i talked to a salesperson at BMW of Ann Arbor yesterday and he doesn't think that dealership will have any in till Feb/Mar. i'm wondering if other dealers have the same story. where are you in MI?

car and driver is probably my least favorite car mag out there now. they've somehow managed to get consistently worse issue after issue.

I think it's the car that is called 'new'330d here in EU but I 'm not sure because the new 6MT 330d has one single turbo and 245BHP... But I have driven the 'real' EU 286BHP 335d and it's good but it feels faster than it actually is because of the torque. I don't like autoboxes and I didn't like the brrrrrr enginesound at 75-100mph. So I bought the 335i 6MT instead back then

no, it IS the 335d.
330d=3 liter single VNT turbo
335d=3 liter sequential two turbo set up

The N American version of 335d has several design changes that result in the HP difference between Europe and NA.

The 335d is actually quicker between 60mph and 110mph than the 335i. It's the best engine BMW make outside of the M model range.

LOL, I was driving my former 335i 6mt and a guy from the BMW dealership the 335d coupe. between 70 & 140mph pushing I was about 3 carlengths faster than him!

We repeated that stuff a few times (100-120mph) and the 335i was quicker still.

What do you mean by best engine outside the M model range? It's a diesel for god's sake.

Without downshifting a gear though it IS indeed very powerful, the 335d. But when you downshift, the 335i always is faster. A friend of mine has a 335d touring E91 chipped(320BHP!) Somewhere around the net is a youtube vid they made, accellerating against a E36 M3(321BHP). The M3 won in every run. from 60-160mph etc etc....And I know the guy from the E36 M3 as well.

The 335d guy admitted his car is fast, but torque is not what you need, it's the RIGHT gear and Horsepower.

actually it's not even debatable because it just isn't true.

besides the 3.0TT .35i BMW makes the new V8TT 407BHP. Great engine as well.

No. I assume you mean in 6th gear or something, in which case maybe it is. The 335d appears to be pretty close in performance to the 330i. The 335i is way faster.

Here are the C&D test numbers from the 335d article, compared to the numbers they got for the 330i and 335i coupe:

1. i didnt even realize a stock 335i has an 11.8s 1/4. very impressive

2. There wont be as many people to jump on the diesel bandwagon because of the premium over the gas equivalent. The 335i, with its turbos, sitll manages pretty good MPG.
(especially now that our economy sucks and the gas prices are super low)

Right gear and horsepower needed for what ? Only if you perform brutal 0-60 flat-out sprints, or 1/4 mile blasts which are only applicable on a track, or a game of Top Trumps.

But as the UK boys who own or have experienced BOTH will be only too keen to tell you there is literally NOTHING in it between a 335D and 335i (no matter what some who have only read about them continually baulk at and try to assure us the opposite) - although the US 335D is slightly down on power compared to the Euro 335D.

Me, I use my 335D in everyday traffic to go to work ... and it does that very nicely indeed. The flexibilty of the 335D in this type of environment is simply peerless. Speak for yourself, but TORQUE is what I need in everyday driving.

I have other toys for high-revving petrol fun

Sooner some Americans can get their posteriors into a 335D and experience it first-hand, the better.

This is the truth. The best thing about a diesel is that its performance is available right where you normally do most of your day-to-day driving.

the following numbers may induce much laughter here, but my 90hp, 155 ft-lb tdi's are much more fun to drive than any of the econo-box gassers I used to drive (110 mile roundtrip daily commute).

It will be quite awhile before I can justify buying a BMW diesel, but I can tell people from experience what a pleasure this engine is to drive .

Once you have a diesel as your daily driver, you may never go back to gas .

Didn't C/D run the 335d through its paces already when they piloted the car in the annual "Lap Around America" race?

They have had plenty of seat time with the 335d.

I am torn between Road and Track and Car and Driver, but I think you might be right!

As an interesting reference the 2005 Hummer H1 (the real one) puts out 450lb-ft, which means this car is pretty much equally capable of getting itself out of a ditch... That is pretty impressive!

I personally still am not sold on this car considering my geographical location and what is it I am looking for in an automobile. But can't deny this car's genius.

+1... Was a huge fan of C&D back in the day. But recently moved and didn't even bother tell them my new address... that's how much I care. I would rather take 4 issues a year instead of 12 but have a lot more content.

why do people really want diesels these days now that gas is cheap again? I see $2.70 for super unleaded and diesel at $3.50, besides diesel really stinks. I just don't get it.
