This is how to steal our cars.
I remembered something about auto thieves using new tools and computer software to jack BMWs. I decided to take a look being that our cars have software starting it (no physical key in the ignition) and that unique looking key to physically open the lock.
Turns out it isn't hard to steal our cars; it just takes some equipment. So, the average moron with a slim jim and pliers can't take it but someone with a laptop and a tool kit could. BMWs 2004 and earlier have a huge flaw in the key cuts. Its called a wafer key system and it was cut to loose tolerances. The modern ones take much longer to get in. Thought this would be interesting food for thought. http://www.techeblog.com/index.php/t...r-tool-exposed I have yet to find info on the software tools that mimic the CA signal but that stuff is out there too.

the people who think this shit up and devise ways to steal...really should get a grip on life, put that creativity to something constructive, go to work, make money, and BUY a car themselves, instead of stealing from others.

niice... except in baltimore, MD, they just jack it and steal it... there's a tow truck on every corner, and once 4pm comes, voila~ if you're parked illegally, it's gone.
...but some douchebag, incompetent, cockface stole my car right off the lot because they "thought" my parking permit wasn't on... what a f'ing joke... i bit the bullet on that one, and just got my car back, ugh. |

So what? Haven't the dealers and locksmiths been doing this all this time anyway? I'd rather have a system that at least allows somebody to be able to eventually get my car open. Anyway this is old technology.
I live in LA, car theft capital of the USA. Thieves steal for the underground parts market or kids do it for the joy of it. No thief is going to stand next to a car and spend that sort of time trying to figure out the codes. Especially an older car. They have faster ways of gaining entry. Theft is pretty much time dependent. Or they'll just use a tow truck as a midnight "extra" business; lots of cars get stolen by criminal towing companies making money on the side. Anyway, bottom line is that they are going to steal your car no matter what if they want it. Just do the usual smart things like don't leave it in vulnerable places; keep belongings out of sight; get an alarm that can help deter opportunity; and basically just pay attention. And let your auto insurance give you the peace of mind. |

Heh, my 993 P-car has the infamous "immobilizer." Not only can't a thief ever steal it, it will sometimes even lock down on me! The starter gets killed, doors lock up, alarm goes off.
It's embarrassing when the battery goes dead in the key fob, or if I have let the doors stay unlocked for a while and try to start the ignition without hitting the key fob button first |
