Drove 60 miles today, including up into the canyon west of our home. Not a single issue with the engine overheating.

Next up, the valve cover gasket!

I just had my water pump and thermostat replaced together by my own mechanic for $1000. I cant imagine how much the dealer would charge. BTW, dealers are replacing with rebuild water pump and per my mechanic, this happens when there is issue with the design of the pump and the manufacture tend to avoid the recall by selling the rebuild rather than new revision part.

My mechanic was able to get OEM new VDO water pump from a warehouse the dealer buy from for $480 and also thermostat for $120. Failed at 78k miles and it is way too soon for this types of part to fail. Going back to Japanese car after I am done with my 335i.

My water pump went last week. '06 325xi with 152K miles....
Yellow warning came up first (engine hot) followed by a red a red warning (overheated) about 10 seconds later. Pulled over & shut the car off right away, and found coolant all over the reservoir area, and on the passenger's side tire.
I called the dealer and they quoted $1,295 to replace the pump & thermostat. Ordered the parts from GetBMWParts.com for ~$525. You need to replace the 3 aluminum Torx bolts that hold the pump to the engine, but the 2 bolts that hold the thermostat to the pump can be re-used.
There's some great videos on Youtube that how how to replace it, but when I got in to mine, I found that I couldn't access the pump/hoses from the bottom of the car like they showed in the video (subframe was in the way). If yours is different than what's shown in the video, note that you can still access the hoses (behind the pump) from the passenger's side, by removing the wheel. The total job took a little over 6 hours to do

I have no idea where from but plastic part of my pump got a crack and is leaking very unpredictably, on top of that (this is yet unverified) I think the pump is also causing the BSD fault code in the DME, and for some weird reason apparently pump ran while car was parked overnight and the battery was well beyond dead in the morning, start button couldn't even light up. Has anyone encountered anything like this?

I registered just to post this.

I just replaced my water pump.. at 48K miles.

I purchased my 2009 335i used and got the 12/12K after-market warranty.... which ran out 400 miles ago.

So I am out 1400 dollars for a warranty, and 1400 dollars for a water pump.

Got no love from BMW when I tried to ask for goodwill, and then.. get this.. a week later got a "Happy Anniversary" card from the dealer.

I'm livid.

Oh, and I have my first dent.. the right rear fender has a mark that appears to be from my neighbors car door. That appeared about a week ago also. LIVID.

$1400? holy hell! I'm guessing you paid shop labor rates to do it?

I could do 3 water pumps for the cost of that warranty...

My waterpump just went out last week on my E92 328i at 92,7XX miles, ordered the new parts for $500.

Going to install it myself once I get the parts.

I keep hearing how everyone elses' pumps failed at 100K or so.. so I wonder why mine failed at 48k???

The shop said they put 5v on one post and ground on the other and the pump didn't turn. Does that sound right?? I wonder if I got screwed by the shop???

Oh, and to clarify... the $1400 was parts and labor for the pump, and thermostat.

yeah I think it's assumed that you replace both. it wouldn't be smart to only do one.

no way I'd pay $1400, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do.

on our E91, I opened up the pump (95k miles or something). No damage or water leakage that I could see. I'd like to test the electronics some point. I just can't shake the feeling that it could be rebuilt, but nobody knows why they actually fail.

Water pump died at 37k miles, wtf!

I had the same problem. Fan goes nuts, I get no hot air vented into the car for couple of days. Been driving around in the cold without any heat, thank the lord for them seat warmers. Anyway, then as I was trying to take the car to a local shop for diagnostics, the yellow thermostat light comes on, followed by the red, then power starts to go and I limp for a mile to the shop. I guess I was lucky in a way since I was on my way to have it looked at.

My car is 2008 and I got it as CPO three + years ago. So warranty expired last summer. My work is close and I don't drive it all that much, but the freaking water pump goes out at 37K miles.

So, what can I do? Pay the man $1k and have it fixed. Every time when a light comes on, I see $$$ flying out from my exhaust on my rear view mirror. Like everyone here, love the car, but the upkeep is a killer.

Well, having had this just under a year, and already put $2400 into it. (yesterday I replaced 1 tire, rear rotors and brakes... $1000 P&L)

If anything else breaks on this car in the foreseeable future, I'm getting rid of it. It's a 2009. I expected WAAAAAAAY higher quality from a German car.. especially at this price. Are they expecting to make residual money selling parts?? The same part seems to keep failing on all these cars.. and it some how cost 500 for a PUMP. A PUMP. PUMP!!! You're kidding right??

My water pump on my 2006 with 65k miles blew a month ago. Cost me 860 something to have it and the thermostat changed. Insurance paid for my tow thankfully, and the shop charged me 499 for the pump, 40 for the t-stat, and then 3 hours of labor or so to do it, plus coolant cost tax and all that junk. I know I could have done it cheaper myself, but didn't have the time, patience, or outside temperatures to support it.

battery

since we are venting... I had to replace the battery last month. I called the dealer and they quoted me $325 for the battery and 1.5 hours for install/labor. So it would have cost over $525. Anyway, I bought exact fit AGM battery at Advanced auto parts for $150 (with coupon) and had it installed and registered by a shop for $100. So $250 total for battery replacement.

Battery and tires, breaks, etc are maintenance, what can you do. But water pump failure-replacement at under 40k miles is insane. Knock on wood, hope nothing else happens for at least another 12 months +

I had to replace my battery 2 weeks ago. Bought the Autocraft Platinum AGM from advance auto but got it for 122 including tax using a 30% off coupon. Installed it myself and then got lucky and my buddy was able to code it/register it for me.

Coding: Required if you are switching from lead acid to AGM.

Registering: Recommended so your car will charge the new battery as such instead of continue charging it like it is a 6yo battery.

2011 e90 335i. 36k. Multiple coolant level low warnings.

I have a '11 335i w/ 36k miles and just over 2 weeks ago I get a "Coolant Level Low!" Yellow light warning. I go and fill BMW coolant myself to inbetween the Min/Max line of the coolant container and the light goes away. Then 4-5 days later the "Coolant Level Low!" Yellow light comes back on. I go to check on the coolant level and it's look like I never even filled it from before so I add coolant yet again (to middle of min/max line). The very next day I check the coolant level and it's like the coolant emptied out again but this time no "Coolant Level Low!" Light yet. Low and behold, 3 days later the yellow warning light comes back.

I'm still under warranty and luckily engine-mod free for now. I will absolutely be taking it in to the dealer but is this a sign of water pump failure? Or something else? Just curious so I can get an idea of what to expect from the dealer

You obviously have a leak. No telling where it could be coming from without looking at the car. Check the expansion tank and the hoses first.

My original VDM water pump finally failed on me last Tuesday night after 101k miles. I had been getting codes for my thermostat for almost a year now, but there was never any issue I saw with water temp (using JB4's gauge hijack feature). I couldn't afford to wait for shipping from an online source, so I called around and checked parts stores and BMW dealerships. The best price I could find was at a local dealership. I paid $488 for the latest water pump (Continental), $121 for a new thermostat, about $5 for the new steel bolts (replaced the aluminum ones) and a gallon of BMW coolant for about $30.

I set my car on jack stands in my driveway and did it myself, with the help of a couple threads I found in here, but especially the YouTube video from Bavarian Auto. The job was kind of a pain, just due to the tight spaces and getting to that top bolt on the pump housing. Otherwise it went well and I'm back on the road.

My battery is what's got to fail next I would imagine. It's also original and I bought the car new in August of 2007! A couple other major things I've had to replace were new turbos (under the factory turbo warranty) at about 78k, miles and then a new clutch (manual) last June. Oh, my shocks were starting to get floaty and crash on uneven surfaces, so I replaced them with Koni Yellows last summer also. Much improved ride now.

I don't think you can replace aluminum bolts with steel. They are still aluminum.
