What constitutes eating oil like crazy? It is not unreasonable or unheard of for a car to be a quart low every 3K miles or so.

BMW has a bulletin about this and the "acceptable range" for any e65/66 is no more than 1 quart every 750 miles. Anymore than that and you have a problem, according to BMWNA. Me being a BMW tech personally has a problem with this but unfortunately, nothing can be done about it. And yes, we do have a few complaints about excessive oil burn in the 7's.
