This baby came in today.

Paired with a seamless white paper background + support, plus light stand and 48" silver umbrella. I now have a small studio

Quick shot playing around with it on 1/32 power

Doe anyone have the Canon 100-400L Push pull lens? I have a few FD mount push pull lenses for my A-1 and im a fan.

How do you like it?

If not, what telephotos do you use? My 200 is getting to be a bit of a problem with its shortness.

I know you can't use the 1.4xii with it. My friend tried mine with it when he rented it and he wasn't happy. It was either AF or something else, he ended up buying one recently. Optically it is supposed to be very good.

I have this lens and love it. It's very versatile, and can be found relatively cheap these days. I can use a 1.4 on it but only on cameras that can f8 autofocus (5d3 and 1 series),and even then it's pretty slow. In its native form though, it has excellent image quality and pretty speedy focus.

Now since you don't need that 300 anymore...
It looks like it is going to serve you well, good color and contrast it seems.

From last night, I'm figuring out how to work this 300 of mine @ ~70 feet.

I use a 500/f4, but I wouldn't recommend starting there, unless money just falls out of your pockets. The 100-400mm is an old, but fantastic lens. Up until a few weeks ago, it used to be my first recommendation as a lens for someone starting into wildlife and birds. Now, I'd urge you to also consider the Tamron 150-600mm for around $1,100. It's getting rave reviews and I've seen lots of great shots taken with it. The difference between 400mm and 600mm is huge when it comes to birds.

The problem is that im that im shooting racing cars on track. Im branch out from relatively close GRC stuff to trophy trucks and TUSC. I worked the Red bull Frozen Rush event and I was really limited by my lenses. So I need a really long and very high quality lens thats capable of dealing with the way I beat things up.

I don't understand your problem. I wander through the woods, climb over rocks and felled trees, wade through mud, etc., with two camera bodies, two mounted lenses, including a super-telephoto, along with two-lenses in my vest and two teleconverters. How is being at the track going to be worse than that? Do you ride on the hood of one of the trucks?

Reliability of an L-series lens is going to beat a Tamron or Sigma in the long haul, but the Tammy/Siggy new lenses are not all-plastic throw aways either.

I think that 400mm is sufficient for most, but not all, race shooting. It'll depend on your access. If you have credentials and get into the pro photo areas, then 400mm will likely be enough. That's a way of saying that a 100-400mm might be enough, as would an EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS-II with an EF 2.0x TC-III, all driven by a 1D X. Another ideal lens is the 200-400mm with the built in 1.4x TC. That's be kick ass for cars and trucks.

You didn't pin a $ limit, so I'm giving you a whole range of options, from 1,000-bucks to mega-bucks.

I get full access everywhere I go, the 70-200 has been good for GRC, but its a little shorter for more open forms of racing. I have a sigma lens but I dont know how tough a tammy lens is. Also hows the focusing speed and accuracy of it? Range is anywhere south of $2000.

Also I work for GRC (I shoot for their media releases and most of the stuff on their social media)

With access and your budget, I think that the EF 100-400mm would be the way to go. It's AF is very good and fast, depending on the body you're using. The ultimate would be a 1D X and a 200-400/+1.4, but that's a $20,000 rig, for when you can't afford to miss any shots.

My friend Stu shoots with the 100-400mm and got this shot yesterday:

I have a 7D and a 5D III, so im assuming that the AF will still be quick. Also, wow, that shot looks great. Exactly what I need.

Thanks

Both your bodies are better than his 60D.

I own the 7D/5D3 combination also. I find that the 5D3 has the superior AF of the two, so that's what I use with my big lenses.

I'm looking forward to reviews on this mirrorless X-T1 body from Fujifilm. It's the first (and currently only) body on the market that will make use of the new UHS-II SD cards that write at 250Mb/s. It has built-in focus peaking and an EVF. The specs claim 8fps, but don't say whether that's RAW or JPEG. I love the dials on top. Check out the top view. You can dial in ISO, SS, and (drumroll please) +/- EV. Very cool. With focus peaking and dial in settings, this camera is tailor made for manual focus lenses.

Up until very recently i was shopping around for used x-e1s because they've plummetted in value, since the x-e2 and x-t1s. the EVF on it is serious business. I rented one and its miles ahead of my x100's evf (though the x100s should be better). But i really only wanted it for the 35mm f1.4 (50mm equiv). But now that theyre creating a teleconverter for that focal length i'm just going to get that for my x100.

I was watching the digitalrev review of it and the EVF on the x-t1 looks like it's very well thought out. EVFs have a lot less lag than they used to and look great with their new high res screens. The really tempting thing about the whole x mount system is their selection of very high quality primes that aren't ridiculously expensive. I mean the equivalent 85mm 1.2 lens is "only" about a grand, for a prime like that, that price is a steal brand new.

First users are reporting light leaks when used in tether mode. That's not so good.
