That concept makes sense though. I'm sure if Jeremy was at WOT during the race like the Prius was, he would've averaged closer to about 6 mpg.

That's funny. I'm surprised the Prius did so poorly. 17mpg? Wow.

I just saw it Monday....but keep in mind that's British Gallon....so in US Gallon the prius is doing around 20.42 MPG...and the M3 is 22.82 MPG.....

however, this is when the prius constantly pushing its 4-cylinder engine and the electric motor trying to be fast....which is not its strength....and the M3 is just using so little power from its 4 liter V8....so its not pushing a lot of fuel and power....

but in stop and go traffic...prius will be more fuel economical....but not constant high speed cruising....

The Prius gets the same mileage as most other 4 cylinders on the highway. The Electric motor only comes into play at low speeds. The batteries also have to be disposed of after these cars get taken off the road, which is a huge problem. They're probably shipped to Alaska and buried underground where the toxic shit will seep into the oceans. Just a guess though. IMO a 4 cylinder Civic is a better choice for the environment and for people's wallets. The cost of a Prius isn't worth it at all, and it would take like 10 years to save the extra money for the car from the savings on gas. Then again I really don't care for one car Toyota makes.

The common Prius buyer does not understand that it does not get better fuel economy than other comparable cars in its class. It is just that you are paying for energy up front with the battery/hybrid technology.

I can sell you an X5 and $10k over MSRP that gets 25-30MPG. Well not really, but I will disocunt your fuel for the first few years.

yea..I dont understand the Prius (prius of shiet)

a member here did some math and I rearrange it a lil to compare to a regular corolla or civic.....no brainer

2009 Toyota Prius (regular gas) (cost of the car $24000.00)
46 MPG combined highway/city
Cost to Drive 25 Miles: $2.14
Fuel to Drive 25 Miles: 0.54 gal
Cost of a Fill-up: $42.20
Miles on a Tank: 493 miles
Tank Size: 11.9 gal
Annual Fuel Cost*: $1282

Based on 45% highway, 55% city driving, 15000 annual miles and a fuel price of $ 3.94 per gallon.

2009 Corolla or Civic (regular gas) (cost of the car $16000.00)
29 MPG combined highway/city
Annual Fuel Cost*: $2037.92

$756 gas saving with the Prius per year
It’ll take about 11 years to offset the savings in gas to the premium ($8000) you pay for the prius.

yea so you'll need to drive the prius of shiet for 25 years to save some real money...who the fuk drives a car for 25 yrs

Don't forget at years 8-11, you need to spend $3-4k to replace the batteries. The more worn they get the less mileage you get. So it would actually take much longer to recoup costs.

I agree you just need to change you driving habits, I have and added 3 to 4 more MPG, but simple staying off the gas and let the car coast more in daily stop and go traffic.

Not a fun filled day of driving that is for sure but is save on the pocket book at the end of the week.

The same problem exist with a prius as well, if can get better mileage by changing how you drive but most people have no clue. Most people drive with the gas or brakes all the way to the floor. But here is how you get 80MPG form a prius it is called hypemiling

Just face it any vehicle you drive has huge impact on the environment, if it is not the gas it is all the other nasty chemicals need to fabricate a car. Making AL is really nasty stuff.

I use to love giving tree hugger grief about their Chromollay bikes they road around on. I would ask them did they realize how nasty Chromium is to the environment, needless to say they did not want to talk about it.

Well said. The whole hybrid and electric car thing is a crock.

Even though nickel mining is not good for the environment, it is good to see that some manufacturers are attempting to change technology for the better. It isn't the electric motors that actually improve the efficiency of the vehicle - it's the CVT and computer software running the engine lean and slow as possible, it's the regenerative braking that reuses the lost energy of braking to put the car back into motion, and the turning off the engine to reduce idling time. Our RX400h has over 33,000 miles on it and guess what - not even the slightest wear on the rotors. I drive our RX400h quickly and it still averages 25 mpg while our RX330 (identical car) only managed 18 mpg. In addition, the RX400h is noticeably faster than the RX330. So, to be 40% more efficient in a heavier vehicle AND be quicker is quite a feat IMO.

Is the 7 mpg significant? Some may say no, but I believe it is. First off, in 2006 there was a 2000$ tax credit so the difference between hybrid and non-hybrid is only $3000. Initially, there was fear about resale due to the batteries, but lately, due to gas costs, hybrids are enjoying better resale (higher residuals). Last but not least, gas is 4 bucks a gallon these days - to recoup the 3,000 it'll only take a couple of years - not the 25 years. So, what about the nickel? They're soon the be replaced by better battery technology - probably lithium ion/polymer. Are they better for the environment? Maybe not, but at least technology is improving and we are learning and getting more efficient vehicles for our futures. I believe the lithium batteries have better capacity, lower weight, and longer life.
