buy him the car HE wants.

The x1 seems to be a popular choice amongst rich kids, so is mini cooper, 3-series and c-class.

my first car was a rx330 a hand me down from my parents, at age 17, all you need is a safe car imo

Why spend that much money on his first car? Ask and see if he'd like to get a manual and a car that is reliable. Pray he appreciates what you are doing for him and can learn a lot from his first ride.

Get him a POS. Make it safe, but a POS. That way he'll appreciate nice cars more when he drives them later. Otherwise, he'll take his 40k car for granted.

Any few years old Japanese econobox. Save the $ until after more driving experience.

jesus christ. Get him something nice but not 40k worth and NOTHING fast. Get him a nice jeep or SUV that he can't kill himself in.. as easily as a sports car at least. I drove a jeep for about 2 years and i loved it. moved to my 128i because the jeep had a lot of miles and i wanted something fun and sporty.

My parents got me an old diesel VW when I first started driving. It was slow, got good mileage and was safe. I thought that was pretty smart.

What he said. Don't need to spend 40k on something your son can have a lot of fun on. My first car was stock Mini Cooper and it was a blast

SUVs are not safe. They are heavy, have train suspension, and are usually powerful. This is not safe, at all.

You shouldn't spend more than 10-15k on his first car. If you want to spend 40k on the car, spend some more money and get him some advanced driving lessons to go with it.

so getting him a 300hp sports car is safer? They have powerful motors but are heavy as all hell so that means they're slow. Train suspension? What does that even mean? Most of them are independent on all four corners, if not they have independent front and a live rear axle with leaf springs or coils.

SUVs aren't safe... They are top heavy and usually have brakes too small for the size of the vehicle. More deaths per crash in SUVs than in compacts, a toyota camry or whatever is much safer than a X3 or alike.

I must say however that if you buy your child an expensive car for his first car he will never respect cars... He'll take it for granted because you just through it at him, and he'll either never have any ambition to earn a nicer car, or he'll poorly budget his money later in life to afford what you gave him when he really can't buy it at all.

Honestly I don't think any kid should ever be given a first car. I'd keep track of all the time the child did chores from the age of 10-16 and then on his 16th birthday, give him the money (at minimum wage) for the hours he had worked to purchase whatever he wanted assuming it was reasonably safe.

And here comes the peanut gallery demanding what someone "should" and "should not" spend on a first car for his child with his own money.

Never fails.

A used Z06. Also he would probably like a gas card to go with it.
