4 Cylinder Diesels are coming to the U.S.

http://blogs.insideline.com/straight...er-turbos.html

Get your 6's while you can.

There's some hint to the 5 series d coming to the states, too...if that's the case, you can bet your bottom that I'll be swapping out my 335d for one. The extra room alone is worth the swap.

I should note that they say within the next decade, so there's a bit of range there, but honestly, I'm not surprised, and it's about time.

I expect that the 320d will be the lowest they'll bring over, but I could be wrong.

There was no mention of price, but you can probably postulate from the current 335d price, or you can see what the UK prices are and do some converting. The US 335d is around $3000 over the 335i, so, if there's a 328d, figure the same, the 320d could be as much as $7k under, etc.

It's really going to depend when they bring them over. What's $43k now could be $47k in 5 years....who knows.

Well, let me assure the cousins in the colonies, after 2 years and 43,000 miles in a 2008-spec 520dSE saloon (sorry, sedan) delivered in October 2007 with the 177bhp 16-valve diesel engine, you have nothing to fear and everything to gain.

I have enjoyed a superbly flexible engine, 49mpg (that's real gallons at 4.5litres/gal, rather than the US gallon at 3.8 litres), and a weekly commuting round trip of 400 miles. It hasn't missed a beat.

Welcome to the world of diesel.

BMW's been pretty clear about where they're heading, especially in the US. With restrictions getting tougher, BMW has said that in order to keep in line, they may be forced to switch to a more efficient 4 cylinder engine.

Makes sense given the new CAFE regulations. Actually, bringing over diesels will lower prices for the petrol engines. Heck, we might even see a TT M3 because of this!

Diesels are just a bridge for BMW til they get a decent hybrid engineered.

I've read a 120d gets something like 43/57 MPG. That's better than a hybrid.

Hopefully they bring an X1 Xdrive2.3d. Perfect small family SUV with some towing ability for a trailer.

I really hope BMW doesn't go the hybrid route. Hybrids are a marketing gimmick and are useless- they're slow, not terribly efficient, and still horrible for the environment because of their dirty batteries. Small diesels are the way to go until science comes up with the next big energy solution.

Where have you been? BMW has an X6 and & 7 Series hybrids. Both are not slow by any means.

The issue with diesels is going to be with what happens to the catalysts. BMW is worried that the diesels will not be able to meet the next round of carbon emission regulations.

The other issue is that US consumers expect certain things from a luxury car and rough and noisy are not 2 of them. BMW redesigned the 3 liter diesel for the US market with numerous modifications (I have explained this before). They are having to do the same with the 4 cylinder and from a cost perspective they are debating if this makes sense.

I was at dinner with some high ranking BMWNA personnel last week and they said they are continuing to explore the feasibility of a 4 cylinder diesel from a cost perspective- will consumers spend $3-4k more for the diesel in a lower model vehicle. Ideally they want to bring it but there are a lot of things that must be done behind the scenes. It would come first in the X1.

The 123d is about as small as they would go in the US, due to revving and overall power delivery.

On a side note- we will be getting the 4 cylinder petrol turbo in development.
