They might, but only if they can find a way to make it weigh at least 3600 lbs.

lol that sounds accurate to me.

But it looks like cars will be forced to cut out a lot of weight if they want to comply with this ridiculous 41.1mpg fleet avg by 2016. I don't see how this is going to work for bmw in the US. Even their hybrids and diesels aren't rated that high.

BMW didn't even bring the X5M and X6M to the Detroit Auto Show because they were embarrassed of them.
embarrassed. Please. I find this very hard to believe. BMW embarrased by something they clearly have a possion for. It's a M !!

Now Chrysler - sure they have reason to be embarrased not even appealing or passion heck even JOY. Well maybe if you owned one you would by default have a deep passion to drive something else.

Just my opinion.
This is my 24th car and 1st BMW. (except my 07 Cooper S) After 17 joiyful months i still love to drive it. Each and everday. I can't say that for any other brand I've owned and I've ran the gammet. haha

well I eversell her I find it has to do so. If anything I would love to add a vert to sit next to her. Hehe. But next dream car is a 6 series cabrio. I just love the look and the M. Well. MMMMM yummy

I thought the one series was supposed to be their new entry level car? That didnt work out well... Costs as much as a 3 series :P

Just hope they dont make the same mistake with the zero.

Why would you go buy an Audi or another make just because BMW is going to make a FWD 0-series. That still leaves the 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, Z, X cars as NON-FWD cars! Will BMW all of the sudden stop making great driving RWD cars just because of a FWD 0-series? NO. And who even said the 0-series is coming to the US anyways??

Stop jumping off a bridge just because of this news sheeesh!

It's a common reaction of the members here, it the 'throw the rattle out of the pram' syndrome were everything they dislike or don't fully understand cause such a reaction.

I say welcome it and embrace it because it's huge sales potential is a necessity for BMW to keep it's independence and stop it from being gobbled up by giants the likes of VAG, Toyota or Mercedes.

A FWD 0 Series is no problem at all. As I said, if it generates extra income which will result in better traditional products, then go right ahead.

I do have a problem, a very big one in fact, with the 1 Series potentially becoming FWD. If they do that, what stops them from doing the same with the 3?

So again, in simple terms:

FWD 0 Series (or whatever it will be called), no problem.
FWD 1 Series, big problem.

EDIT: I don't mean to be all precious about it, but if I could translate this pulsating vein on my forehead at the thought of a 1 Series in FWD format I would've.

Seriously. If it makes money for BMW and allows them to make the RWD cars in their lineup better then what's everyone's problem?

And ... TOUCHDOWN. We're over the Goal Line, as the clock shows 00:00.

No company can make the products we want to buy and run without also making products that other people want to buy and that we won't like.
You gotta pay all of your bills first before you can do anything else.

I thought BMW already made a small, FWD car called the Mini Cooper?

Yes that's true but the Mini is a niche product and staying true to the original design has given it packaging issues that a purpose built 0 series wouldn't have. I reckon if the 0 series was priced similarly to that of the Mini it would out sell it 2 to 1.

I also hear complains about a possible switch to fwd for the 1 series, my I tell you that compared to it's rivals the 1 series is a sales flop, this is partly price but mostly packaging, the rwd platform limits the usable passenger space and since most purchases in this sector are from young families space is number one on their list, not driving dynamics.

I won't bail on them, but I don't get it...

A few years back BMW ran an ad campaign against Audi showing an "odd" looking rabbit with its back legs on the front. Said something like "this is why we don't make FWD cars."

Which was BS at the time because a Mini is a BMW, and its FWD, but still, making a FWD BMW just seems counter-intuitive to the brand they've created...

The reality is that on anything that hasn't the poke to kick to tail out there is little or no real benefit to the fun factor. So in reality probably 60% of the cars BMW sell offer little or no fun benefit than all the fwd cars they are competing with.
