Slice big hole in dashboard (non iDrive) to install a flip up LCD

Has anyone tried this?
http://www.1addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=222753
It appears that they cut through the dashboard using a template to fit some kind of compartment.
My idea is to try this and install a flip up LCD (or tablet).

I have something I'm working on. Hopefully it will be done in a month or two and I'll have something to show. I've had a second dashboard sitting on my kitchen table for three months.

thank you.
I have read through so many threads in this forum and I am surprised no one has tried this yet.

I wasnt nuts enough to try it on my car. I bought a whole dash from a salvage parts supplier for $180 (it came with about $400 of other parts on it) and have been cutting on that.

People who do these cutting mods are nuts. Seems to pay off though. A fixed 7" tablet would be cool.

I love it. Anyone who has the nuts to cut holes in their car is totally fine by me.

The compartment looks useful, but I'd probably pick a different setup if it were for a specific purpose like GPS - I find cars that come with factory "navigation" in the form of a rebranded garmin in a flip up look a little bit afterthoughish. I can envision a really cool stealthed slide-out tablet install, though. Maybe I'll have to try something like that

yea, that is exactly what I am looking at, but it is not for the e90. I just want to make sure it is doable before I cut my e90 dashboard open.

wouldn't be harder to install the whole dashboard , it looks like one solid piece and there start bottom would have to be removed. More chance of messing something up.

I think once the air vents are removed and you can see underneath , its not that bad to cut the whole , at least you can see how far the saw is going and there is not much electrical going around that area, still takes balls though

Speaker in the middle of dash on my car.
Made a custom braket and mounted a Nexus 7.
Hardwired it via a 12v to 5v converter under the dash.

thank you for finding the video. That is EXACTLY what I wanted. Too bad they don't sell that kit for e90's.

If you could motorize it, make it look like it's not really something made to open then it would be cool. Having the ability to keep something in a car without fear of it being stolen would make this worthwhile. I personally would do a nexus 7 on the pogo pin dock and wire the compartment to open when the start button is pressed and close when it is pressed again. I think this could be done pretty easily with a servo motor. Good luck!
