Scratch/Gouge in bumper on leased 335i

Hi all, I am new to posting here, but have been lurking for a few years. Not sure if the MO on this board is to start a new thread or resurrect one of the ancient similar ones, so here goes...

I got euro delivery on one of the first 335's and am a little over halfway through my lease, and wouldn't you know it I finally got a small mark on the rear bumper while in a parking lot. I've kept the car immaculate and even preserved the original tires in hopes of either selling for a profit at lease's end or turning it in with no hassles. I've heard horror stories about being charged for using touch-up paint or getting non-dealer body work done come lease inspection time, and was just wondering if there's any truth to it. Also, even though it's a pretty small scratch, it irks me every time I look at it because the car is otherwise perfect, except for a small curb mark on one rim that I've learned to live with. So, in your opinion, what's the best way to cover it up without paying for it when it comes time to sell/return the car? Thanks!

I put a good scratch on the rear bumper if my A4. Probably about 4 inches long, and noticable. I used touch up piant. And did it myself. (pretty obvious) the lease inspector missed it completely. And I was not charged for it. Moral of the story, you will be surprised at what the assessors can miss!

So if it can be buffed out, they won't worry about it. If it's deeper, then you need to take care of it.

Or of course if it bothers you as you said.

Thanks for the comments. For reference, here is a pic of the scratch:

Also, I am fearing a big $$ recommendation of bumper replacement by the dealer, and am sure a good body shop can take care of it for much less. So you guys think the dealer won't notice if I get someone else to fix it?

haha I just found a big ole scratch in my 328 today too... although i've only had mine for about 6 months.

mine is on the left side skirt. i think i'm probably going to just replace it because it looks too deep to fix. My guess is from what it would cost to sand down and repaint I could get one from Tischer and just install it myself.

GL with your fix.

Don't worry. Normal wear and tear is fine and you won't be charged for minor scratches and dings (can't see your pic to tell how bad by the way).

Thanks, Mike.

When you turn in your car, they're going to send you a disk that shows you what they'll charge based on the size of the damage, starting with a quarter-sized scratch. FWIW I had a massive, deep scratch (much bigger than the one you have) that looked hideous on my previos E60 530i and I was charged $500. For you, they may just let it slide or charge less than $200.

eeek!

i didn't see that before. take it to a body shop before you consider replacing the whole bumper... they still might be able to fill/paint to fix it.

The way to do it: Just let it ride until the lease assessor comes. If he notices it and feels like charging, he will. If not, you are home free. (you could always touch it up) If he does notice it, he will quote you on the spot. If you think you can get it fixed for a more reasonable price, then you can shop it around. Thats what I would do. But then again, the assessor missed ALOT on my car. Front lip damage (both scratched and damaged), the previous mentioned scratch in the rear bumper, minor rim rash, other small blemishes. The only thing I got charged for was $200 for when someone keyed my car. That scratch was "a little too deep" he said. Could have been ALOT worse. Good luck man

update

So they fixed it for a couple hundred bucks. Not bad, reasonable price, it looks good, and I don't have to worry about that ugly scratch for the second half of my lease. Thanks for the comments and advice.

I had it done while getting my 15k service. After the service, I think I am getting more of what feels like turbo lag. For a few days, I tried to convince myself it was my imagination, but I can't shake the feeling. Feels like about 0.8 seconds between when I floor it and when the power kicks in, whereas before it was easily less than half that.

I know for sure that they upgraded the firmware in the computer, because the whole iDrive system is different and it has new features. I am wondering if they tuned something differently in the engine. It kind of feels similar to the lag I felt in the weeks before my first fuel pump went bad. Anyone else experience this in the 335i after the 15k service?

I guess I should search the forums and probably start a new thread on that, if I can't find anything...

Well, not that it matters anymore, but I would have fixed it closer to your lease end date. That way, if you get another scratch, it can be fixed altogether rather than shelling out twice.

An old high school friend leased a 325i around the same time i did three years ago. She turned hers into the same dealer I use and she had about 5 or 6 dents from car doors, many scratches and a windshield with a significant chip. The tires also has considerable wear and were nearing the end of their life. She leased a new x3 and they didn't say a peep or charge a penny. I think if you are leasing from them again, they will let many many things slide. My dealer has always been especially generous when i've returned leased cars. They usually overlook a few interior stains, a broken cupholder, etc. as well as minor paint and body work- especially if they know they are getting your business again. If they charge you up the ass you might not want to come back...

GENERALLY, if a credit card can hide it, there is no charge. You are allowed one per quarter of car (4; front, back, left side, right side). Like another poster already said, they will send you a round disk with prices right on the thing about 6 weeks from lease end. Exceed it (ring), AND IT GETS PRICEY.
