LSD questions, save $$$?
Got a question for all you E92 drivers. Have any of you ever split the case on a E46 dif and pulled the carrier? How does it compare to the E92s? I want a LSD so I'm wondering if the e46 will fit the e92. Save some $$. If no one has done it yet, well, lets give it a try.

I'll head out to the junk yard today after work and see what I can find.

The E46 never came with an LSD either except for M3s, and those LSDs aren't that great to begin with. Earlier cars such as the E36, E30, E28 etc have LSDs from the factory, but they don't fit the E46 or E9x diff cases. E46 and E9x LSDs are specific to their cases, which is what makes them more expensive.

You need a large set of snap ring pliers to get the diff out of the newer cases (E9x, E6x, etc) because they no longer use 6 or 8-bolt side covers. The snap ring is ground to size (thickness) to set gear contact and preload, and they are extremely tough to get out. You must put the snap ring back in the same side you pulled it, since it's there for preload and gear contact pattern.
I do a lot of stuff here at the shop, but a diff is one of the things that I pay Dan at Diffsonline to do for me. I don't have the experience or patience to set gear contact and bearing preload, which is critical in making a diff run silently and not blow up.
