These 5D2 RAW files are really massive... fills up my CF cards pretty quickly. I spent the last couple hours just moving my LR3 library to a network drive. It wasn't straightforward.

Now, I can finally save and go through my India pics...

I want to take some night shots of downtown L.A. for wall decoration..nothing huge. Any suggestions on settings?

I have a Nikon D7000 and a 18-200 VRII lens and a tripod.

f/10+, try to stay below ISO640, turn off NR if you're doing less than 2 minute long exposures.

you should try to stay around the f/8 sweet spot. and use the delayed shutter feature (if your camera has it) or a 2 second timer.

next tuesday should be interesting... rumors point to a 1D5 announcement from Canon. A week later Nikon supposedly will announce the D800.

32G CF cards have gotten relatively cheap.

i think that's BS, personally. There's no 1DsIV yet, there's no 5Diii...the Canon Product cycle is much longer than this. But...if it does happen, i'm getting a 1Div. I'd really like a 1DsIII though.

Well, some rumors have said they will combine the 1D and 1Ds lines, so this might be what they were referring to. Plus, I don't think Canon will make the same mistake as last time, where they released the 5D2 before the 1Ds3 thereby taking away some sales on their higher end body. I think people have been saying that the 1D line will be refreshed before the 5D one.

Then again, who knows... there's always room for a new 3D (no pun intended) in there somewhere

Any chance of a D7100? If I can get the D7000 with a swivel display, I'd be happy. I'm real close to getting D5100 because of the swivel display and the fact that it has the same sensor as the D7000. Problem is, I know how delicate those cheap plastic camera bodies can be. My D3100 actually has a hairline crack on it from lord knows what. Maybe the camera banged into something while slung over my shoulder.

probably not.... I think they are looking to upgrade their pro/semi-pro lines right now. Plus, the D800, D3, 1D, 5D all are at the end of their typical life cycles.

per your suggestions...i'm waiting on a 5diii, hoping they'll combine the speed of the 7d and the low light capabilities of the 5dii

Why in the world are you worried about a swivel display? When you hold a dslr properly you don't even see the display. For chimping, you can simply tilt the camera away from you, take a quick look and then go back to shooting.

For video, I understand it, but I think that a dslr is a poor choice for a camera that will be primarily a video camera. A dslr is hard to use for video as a casual camera. You have to be serious with a big tripod, fluid head and/or a stability rig to use a dslr for anything other than the occasional video.

A swivel display increases the odds of a failure considerably I'd guess.

Yeah, we'll see what Nikon comes out with. If it's the D800, then I expect a winter announcement for 5D3. If not, then I don't expect the 5D3 until Spring, at the earliest.

I think a swivel display can be useful for photography in some cases. However, its use for video is more prevalent. That being said, I don't think a dSLR primarily for video is a bad choice. Remember, they shoot House on the 5D2, tons of music videos, commercials, short films, etc.

Exactly, but the tripods and stabilization equipment cost many times what the 5D2 costs. It's entirely a MF (manual focus, not the other MF) operation. That's fine for pros shooting House, but a pain for those of us trying to get a shot of the kids.

Have you ever tried shooting video with a dslr? It's not exactly point and shoot, at least if you care about quality.

Dave

wouldn't a follow focus fix and a nice stabilizer fix this issue? I'm thinking a decent setup would cost no more than a $1k, no?
