I wanted an Orange Mitsubishi Eclipse GT as my first car. My parents got me a silver '06 325i instead.

Let's just say, I'm definitely glad they did.

Lots of jealousy on this forum.

For 40k maybe you could get a 320i? For that price you could get a fairly well optioned one, and it's definitely not too fast.

people that think because you are a teenager you WILL be a unsafe driver with a nice car is totally false.

I grew up around fast cars, and not going to lie i came from a wealthy family also. It really depends on the kid and where he is coming from if he/she will be safe or not.

when i was a teenager my dad through money at me to keep me "occupied".

I am 22 now with a 2013 M3. when i was 19 i had a 500WHP 2010 Camaro SS. built motor heads cam, long tube headers, after market suspension etc . something like 45 grand dropped into the car (car included). my dad got me addicted to cars, and said as long as you do well in school and stay away from drugs and other dumb shit. this is how you are going to roll around town.

guess how many tickets i have in my life ? zero. ask me how many MIPs i have ? ask me if care to smoke pot ? ask me what it feels like to drive cars like this at my age? its better than pot....

point being having nice stuff can be a good thing. anyone can have a nice car at a older age. having a nice car at a very young age is EPIC.

i only hope i can do the same for my kids.

Most teenager are irresponsible. It is not dismissive or an insult. We have all been there.

For the odd one that is not (hey, everything is possible), they are also INEXPERIENCED. Even the most safety conscious teenager is at greater risk of making a mistake. Simple lack of training.

That's why in my opinion it is wasteful to have a nice car as the first one. It will get scratches and bumps from petty driving mistakes. Even otherwise responsible teenagers can act stupid with cars, hence the mitigation strategy on getting something safe in case of crash, and low power with good balance (fw) to reduce crash risks even when doing stupid things.

I guess by now the op's son is looking like a boss in his high school in his Benz L

I'd personally get him something big and safe like a full size pickup or SUV. I also wouldn't spend anywhere near $40k on a first car just because its bound to get damaged etc and there just is no need.

I'm willing to bet you hammered those cars on more than one occasion. Although I do envy your situation.

ya i would agree i probably beat on my cars more than my father does on his car. but its nothing i would call reckless.

i will manly wind out A gear or two. which does happen rather often. but when traffic and roads permit me.

My first car was a fairly new lexus rx330 handed to me from my parents. I wanted a mini. i sold the RX and bought a mini eventually lol. if your wife says get a x5 instead of a m3, would you be happy?

u cut a bit of my post which is deceiving, i said buy him the car he wants as long as its a safe car.

not sure how I'm showing signs of jealousy?

If he takes anything without permission then he will be dealt with by the law and then I would break his legs.

One thing is wife, another thing is is parents buying for you.

My parents knew me better that I knew myself. Still do.

The jealously was referred to the rest of the people in this topic. I just used your statement to comment on the whole "want to get/will get" thing.

My first car was a hand me down 1993 Ford Escort. When I was was 17 I got a job and bought (dad signed but I paid) a 1995 Eclipse GS-T. Looking back now I really wasn't responsible enough to have a sports/sporty car.

I was always granny shifting and not double clutching like I should. One time I gave it a 100 shot of NOS and I was lucky it didn't blow the welds off the intake. I eventually had to rip apart the block and replace the piston rings I fried.

Definitely wait before getting him a really nice car! Let him gain experience on something else; you can still get him something decently nice and good looking for much less; but if something goes wrong, you will have less to worry over.

Get a GTI -- or something used but (obviously) in good condition. That being said the 1series is an excellent car.

^^^^ literally laughed out loud....

I think it more depends on how the persons is taught to drive whether they will be responsible or not. I think the best way to get a kid a car...especially coming from an enthusiast is to get something crappy and fix it up into something nice that they can drive by the time they have their license. I've always found that when I have payed for and spent time on something I take care of it much better than anything given to me....
My first was a 99 5mt ranger....and I drove the shit out of that thing.
I was very lucky to have never had a serious accident in it.

....plus how awesome would it be to have an e30 or something that you built once you got older?

Give him the $40k and let him decide on what he wants to do with it. It's not a bad idea to get the youngster to start managing his own money early.

Life isn't always fair so people really need to accept that fact and carry on with your own.

GTI/TSX/FRS/Focus ST.

I got my TSX when I was 15 and a half. It was around 33-34k out the door (Standard comes with Leather, moon roof, premium audio, heated seats, xenon's, paddles etc..) I have the SE trim which comes with aero bumpers, side skirts, sport seats, wheels etc... Super fun car that I love tossing around. Easy to mod/work on. After 6 months the only complaints I have is that it requires premium gas and maintenance can be expensive. At 12k miles its costed around $450 in 2 scheduled services. My parents let me buy something like this first to learn how to drive in, after I prove I can handle it I can move to something like a 135i (but that's after I visit the track for instruction)
