Now's the time to see velvet Ed.

Of course, the elk rut comes in late September or early October around here, so if you want to see some fights, that might be a better time. The bulls are all hanging out together right now. The dominate ones will start exercising their authority in about another month.

It takes time and patience to set up. On a few shots I forgot to fine tune the focus and they came out soft. My best piece of advice is to go alone when you use this lens. Anyone shooting with you, or worse, not shooting at all, will get bored and make you feel rushed. This lens takes time to use to its full capability.

Well yes, but you could also simply use it as an exceptionally sharp full-frame prime, which wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

I may borrow a 24mm TS-E from CPS to see how much difference I can tell after digital lens optimization to my current zoom. I think that I'll be able to see it, even after DLO applied to the zoom.

That's what I did here. Incredible sharpness with this lens. 100% crops are a given. You can almost pull 200%, but not quite.

Do you use any form of diigtal lens optimization for your other lenses and/or this lens?

For this particular shot, since I didn't use tilt or shift, I applied the default Canon 24mm f1.4 corrections in Photoshop. I also applied some sharpening, but even SOOC the images are crisp.

Photoshop does not have a preset for this exact lens as you're not supposed to really be applying corrections if you tilt or shift, but when used as a straight 24mm prime, I think the 24mm f1.4 preset works well.

Checked out your Flickr and you can see the nest on the light pole in Google maps.

I might try that location sometime.

It's pretty easy to get to, although it's a bit of a hike from parking to the view area.

Getting there is easier than going to Hawk hill in the Marin headlands.

Thanks, Chewy. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the drapes in my room and saw the view.
