Second, to those speculating the doors did not "fly off". They were cut off as well as the roof by the emergency responders. It's common practice to get to the occupants of a vehicle. Also, there is nothing wrong with BMW pillars. There is not a car currently made that would withstand the amount of energy absorbed in this crash without massive damage. Nor is there a human body that can absorb it.
Being a firefighter myself its actually kind of sad to see these pictures because I know what this person looked like. This is essentially a death scene and unfortunate that its being pasted on the Internet. You probably wouldn't want your mom or dads moment of death pictured for the unwashed masses to speculate over. Disrespectful to the dead.
Peace to his family in the difficult years ahead.
Very well said, and I agree with you totally. Also, you have a really tough job. Be careful and thank you for what you are doing sir.

Oh, and RIP...

I wouldn't bash BMW's safety rating over this, ANY VEHICLE traveling at a high rate of speed crashing into a block of metal will not fair well. These are still some of the safest cars on the road.
+1. I'm not saying the trucker is at fault but in general, they need to do a WAY better job of judging the environment around them. My uncle was involved in a serious accident (he ended up ok but car was totalled) and it was the trucker who blindly merged into his lane without looking and clipped the rear of his car that forced him into the rail. Now I'm not saying trucks can't switch lanes but there is no reason for them to be in the far left. Most if not all cars on the highway are going to be driving faster than the truck so they should be in the right lanes depending on how many lanes there are. Also, aren't trucks speed limited to a top speed? Personally, unless you're exiting, they should stay in one lane.

I totally agree Scott, I know we live in a media rich world with graphic images shown on our televisions every night but for his family and loved ones these pictures should be removed or at least edited.

Well high speeds are the norm here in Germany. Average speed for most on the autobahn are around 100 to 125MPH. That's in the unlimited speed areas.

My condolences go out to the family of this man.

Because the autobahn is free and legal. Track time costs lots of money.

Anyway. My prayers are with his family and friends. At least he went quickly.

I am almost certain they cut the roof off. They do this as a procedure to get to the victim out easier with less possible damage to the body while removing him or her from the car. For example, someone had a neck injury it would be easier to safely remove that person from the car with more angles than just the door.

In some countries (and on some US roads) trucks are only allowed in the left (slowest) two lanes. Not only does this add safety but also prevent three trucks lined up going about 1mph faster than eahc other taking 5 minutes too all overtake each other.

Thats horrible, my condolences to his family.
Its stupid to have them do high speed tests on public roads, even though theres no speed limit, doesnt mean you need to speed excessively, Im sure he was doing as he was told by bmw so this isnt his fault.

The clear reason the driver was killed is due to the lack of lower bumper on the trailer to stop a car from continuing to the last axle of the trailer of the truck.

Maybe BMW can use this to influence a change in safety requirements, and make it illegal to have unsafe trailers on the roads without proper bumpers to prevent this kind of tragedy in the first place.

This was not a high speed test, this is what happens without proper lower bumpers in place.

Very very sad.

Truly sad! That us also the stretch I used for my fastest run in my 1M. Ironically I didn't hit top 155 mph because I got nervous about passing truck on right at high speed! I backed off at 150 and coasted to pass truck. Puts new meaning to BMW putting blood, sweat and tears into building and developing our cars.
The other observation is that this was an offset crash like is tested nowadays and current 3 series didn't do as well. However, this would not gave mattered here because of speed and because he went under the truck partially. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

I agree with what you are saying, but sometimes I think it serves a better purpose to show these pictures. Accidents like these happen every single day around the world, you just don't hear about them because they don't involve your favorite car or a BMW test drive, etc. Showing that accidents can even happen with very skilled drivers might cause some people to think twice before driving recklessly (or not as defensive as they should) which could save someone's life (especially when innocent bystanders are involved). I guarantee at least a couple of people will think of these pictures the next time they are driving.
