IMG's Event at NJMP Lightning: HPDE/TT/Races July 14-15

I know it's a bit early, but just a heads up to guys in the Northeast area looking for track days, etc. The Independent Motorsports Group (IMG) is hosting their "Heat Lightning" weekend event on July 14-15, 2012, at NJMP Lightning Circuit. There is HPDE/Time Trialing, and for racers, the Sprint Races (and their new series, ETC European Touring Car):

Registration for NJMP with IMG

Independent Motorsports Group

IMG is a very well run organization, and it is really starting to pick up speed in terms of popularity. Charlie Greenhaus is the head of IMG, and has decades of experience running organizations and racing behind the wheel. He told me his main focus was to have a fun, adrenaline-packed event, while keeping costs down and being very strict about any car-to-car contact. They have many Porsche and BMW enthusiasts/racers as well as others who will vouch for them that they run great events. Clean driving and maximum fun are their main goals.

I just wanted to help spread the word as I personally attended their Lime Rock event on May 28th, and it was incredible. IMG have some of the nicest people around, and Charlie made sure that the event performed beyond my expectations. Everything was positive and easy going, safe, and fun, which in my opinion is ideal when doing track days/racing.

A few photos from their last event at Lime Rock on 5/28:

Excellent! I'll definitely be there! Instructors will be assigned to HPDE1/Novice drivers, but don't worry, they don't just let you coast around the track either

Great! You definitely will not be disappointed. And remember, the more entries IMG gets for either race groups or HPDE's, the schedule can be shuffled a bit for your best interest (whether you want longer or shorter breaks in between sessions) so spread the word

It will be nice to see Camaros run! It's a great track and even in HPDE1, you'll definitely get the M3 to "stretch its legs" on the front straight. 100+ mph for even the most cautious drivers

bump for IMG! Sign up soon! Don't wait until the last minute as IMG likes to keep their run groups somewhat small to keep traffic down.

I was in the novice group. There were only 5-6 people on track, felt like i had my private session.
Here is my fastest lap. To save brakes, i didnt step on it on the main straight away, i still had my brakes fading and melted away.
time for brake pads and fluid.

Thanks, i have plenty experience with track so i think i should have gone intermediate but novice group was empty so it felt like i had my private event. Also my brake fluid was stock, and i had brake issues last month, and old PS2's , made me stick with that group. I was lifting off of the gas on the main straight and the area from turn 7 till end of turn 9, to conserve tires and brakes. If not, my instructor said i would be running low 1:20s. The brakes faded anyway. so i kind of feel stupid, if they were going to fade, i should have just pushed it all the way
anyway for VIR i am definitely getting new pads and fluid.
The brake problem a month ago, during a routine drive to work had decreased my confidence on them

Really enjoyed this event - my 1st- and am thankful for to MrFukengruven for alerting me to it. Everyone I met was great. Thanks again to all of you for the pointers. I can't wait to see the video. Still can't get over how good paradocs98's car sounded coming down the front straight (and how good it looked). I'm hoping that I will be able to share some pics as well (just need to get them in a format that works).

Here is a clip of two of my fast laps, which I ended up doing back-to-back. I was really hoping to get below 1:18, as this had been my previous fastest time at NJMP Lightning. The 1:18 lap I had run before, though, was last November in 55-degree weather, on a grippy track, while this weekend's temps were in the 90s and the track was getting greasy. So, comparatively, even though I didn't break below the 1:18s this time, I was probably running faster than last November--it certainly felt like it!

I was experimenting with coming into the bowl or "lightbulb" a little bit faster, so that I could carry more speed through this turn and onto the front straight. I had been feeling the car move around a bit under braking coming into this turn, and was using this to help rotation. This clip shows me trail-braking a bit too much and unsettling the car when it's on that fine edge. My hands were definitely too slow in responding.

In addition to the usual HPDE participants and spec racers running with IMG over the weekend, a new Grand Am Rolex series team from New Jersey, Limitless Racing, brought their Audi R8 GT car for testing. Very cool looking racecar, with evil-looking red lenses on the headlights. It ran in the race group and the advanced HPDE group. On Sunday intermediate and advanced groups were combined, so I ended up on the track with this beast. Needless to say, I was quick to give a point-by. Here's what it sounded like blasting by me. Even as it pulls away and puts a few hundred yards between us, you can still hear it downshifting while approaching corners.

Again, it was a fun weekend with a nice group of people. Wishing IMG every success in the future as they build and grow.
