Used F10 with 60k on the clock?

Hi all,

I'm looking for some sound advice on whether or not it's wise to purchase a used (UK import to Cyprus) mid 2010 520d F10 with roughly 60k miles on the clock.

The condition of the car inside and out is immaculate and plan on having it checked out at the local BMW dealer (100+ point check etc.) before making any final decisions. I haven't taken it for a test drive yet so was hoping to get more info before i do.

Are these diesel engines solid? what are the main issues that i should be looking out for when test driving a car with such high mileage?

Thanks for any help!

Cheers,

Peter

Thanks for the feedback so far.

I'm sure the 100+ check done through BMW will point out any issues that might be present currently.

I would like to get some thoughts on the mileage for an engine of this calibre. Is 60,000 miles for a 3 year old car with these specs not a wise choice? Any thoughts?

Do you have any idea of the history, can you trace the old owner via the log book/ DVLA?

60k in 3 years says to me it's been a reps car and has probably seen the motorway for most of it's life, therefor, initially, I'd say it's better than a lower milage car that's been used for stop/start journeys commuting or school run.

As said, I'd definitely try and get a warranty from the dealer, as if they are 100+ point checking it, you want them to put some skin in the deal, else the check is worthless IMHO.

Regarding whether the engines solid, 60k for diesel is just running in, I'd say these things are good for 200k as long as their maintained properly.

Thanks for the feedback, Beancounter_74. I've only managed to get the VIN number but not sure of any online services in the UK that can do a thorough search using only those details. No existing log book or prior registration details available.

Still, the car seems solid and i'll most probably go for it. One small thing i noticed is that the boot didn't have it's 520d badge on it, does that mean this may have been in an accident and repaired or is it common in the UK to have these removed or purchased without badges?

Perfectly common not to wear the badge, mine does'nt.

I agree with beancounter, 60k of motorway use is far better than low town mileage.

I had tons of problems with my May 2010 535i; my colleague has a Oct 2010 F11 520d with a mileage north of 125k miles. Car didn't miss a heartbeat.

60k is nothing. I do around 20-25k a year, so at 3 years old, it would be no problem. So long as it is properly serviced and everything looks okay, I wouldn't worry about the mileage.

Might be worth taking out BMW warranty on it, if it's cheap enough, but otherwise I wouldn't care about it too much so long as you get it for the right price.

Mine will have 120,000 on when I give it back at the end of the lease. 60,000 is nothing as long as its been looked after.

Just out of curiosity @Sjoerd, what problems did you have?

The one i have my eye on is an October 2010 F10. Just got the order today and off to the bank tomorrow!
