Bought used E90, -16,000km on oil change?!

I bought a used 2006 325i last week and today, I was looking at the service indicators and found that it says -16,000KM on the oil change indicator.

I'm going to take it in for an oil change ASAP but given that this runs on synthetic oil, will there be a lot of damage to the engine? I really wish I knew about this before I purchased the car.

Could it be that they might have forgotten to reset the oil indicator on the car? I'm surprised the car can still run fine being -16,000KM overdue for a oil change.

I've had a loaner once that was at -2000Km but 16000 kms in the hole is terrible. Do you have paperwork from the previous owner(s) showing the maintenance performed on it? I hope for you that it is just that the service indicator was not resetted. I really don't know how long you can run on an engine that is long overdue for an oil change.

Good luck.

How does the oil look when you open up the filler and scrap a drop onto a white piece of paper? Mine's a caramel color there by the time I change it, if it's black, be worried. If that's the case, run the next change for 500 mls and change again, filters too, to flush that crap out.

As a pre-caution, you might want to have an oil analysis done when you drop this oil. Blackstone Labs here in the States. Go to their website to order a kit.

Relax. There is probably no damage to your engine. The oil change interval for a E90 325i is anywhere between 15,000 miles to 17,000 miles (25 - 28 KMs). They probably forgot to reset the oil service indicator. How many miles are on the car?
