Thumbs down BMWs bound for New York Autoshow stolen prior to show

As reported on Bimmerpost Homepage.

Those of us who have seen (or will see) the BMWs at the New York Autoshow have apparently been viewing replacement cars and missing other cars scheduled to be shown. 6 BMWs were stolen in 3 separate heists from a NJ processing center and a private facility - a sophisto gray 550i, 535xi, 650i, 750LXI.

According to NYPOST:
Quote:
Car thieves snatched a rare BMW bound for the Javits Center auto show as it sat in a processing center at a New Jersey port, sources said yesterday.

The 550i Sophisto -- the only one in this country -- was among six Beemers stolen in three heists at the Port Authority-owned lot in Jersey City and at a private facility in Elizabeth, sources said.

The $90,000 sedan was driven off early on March 13 from the BMW Port Jersey preparation center in Jersey City. It was supposed to go on display at the New York International Auto Show.

At least three thieves broke into the lot just after 2 a.m. and drove off in the Sophisto, a 535xi and a 650i, sources said.

They returned Monday night and swiped a 750 LXI. On Wednesday night, the gang is believed to have swiped at least one Beemer from a company facility in Elizabeth.

They can steal an Audi or Mercedes but not a BMW.

Ok,

Stealing a 'one of a kind' car is dumb, now everyone will know what to look for. What are they going to do with it now?

Well that explains why those cars @ Javitz were equipped with "uncomfortable" comfort seats.

Shouldn't be too hard to track them down. How many unregistered, 2011 models could there be in the tri-state area? Haha, right?

I wish I could say I was surprised to hear about this but having grown up in Elizabeth and being familiar with the port, Im not surprised at all. Definately sounds like an inside job. On another note, will now have my eyes open for a one off BMW in my neighborhood.

Maybe.

On 2 separate occasions, I've actually visited the "stockyard" in Jersey City where their cars are held until delivery: once to see the E60, and once to see the E90. I parked my car outside the 15 foot gates with barbed wire and wandered right inside... and this was in broad daylight. I walked around and peered into the cabins of the cars like it was nobody's business.

I'm not saying it wasn't an inside job, but if it wasn't, I can certainly understand.
