N54 in the new 7 series

It's been officially stated that the N54 engine used in the new 740i produces 325 hp and 45.9 kgm tq.
Does this mean that the N54 engined used in 335i is capable of producing more power with higher boost?
I know it is capable but does it prove that it is safe and reliable?

It has already been proven that BMW under rates their engines. With that said, it's been proven numerous times over at e90post that the 335 does actually produce closer to 330 hp.

These guys are the most consistent and accurate source for true power output I'm aware of. According to them, the N54 produces exactly 282 HP.

Yeah, but that's wheel HP; not sure what the drive train loss is.

On most RWD cars it is around 20%. So they're saying the engine produces around 350 hp?

282whp x 1.20 = 338.4bhp

The correct math would be:

282 / 0.8 = 352.5

If that's the way to do it then that's cool, but could you explain why?

If there's a 20% loss, couldn't you just multiply 282 x .2, which equals 56.4, then add that to the original number of 282 and get 338.4?

I think I'm missing something.

That would be 20% of 282 but we're looking for an output that after 20% loss will equal 282. i.e.:

X - 0.2X = 282

0.8 X = 282

X = 282 / .8

The engine's max horsepower potential is the same for any car it is dropped into.

However, if the actual HP for a 335 is say 340HP and 20% less at the rear wheels (272 HP), that does not mean the same engine in the 7 series would yield the same results. In theory it should but it really depends on the software programming and the MPG BMW is trying to achieve along with the drive train components and gearing used.

The loss on BMW autos is 13-15%, not 20. The manual is 12%.

it is so strange to see bmw going back ... from 740i to 745i and now back to 740i ? it seems like this engine is a bit small for such a big car ... i would like to see it with 4.4 TT like on X6 ...

I agree. It would be nice to see the 318d make its way over here. 50MPG would be nice.

I think the V8/12's are going away. More turbos will be used in 4 and 6 cyl engines.
